CHAPTER 302: WORTHLESS BY EVERY COMPARISON

EMBER’S POV

“Do you-” I pick at a thread on the blanket, not looking at him. “Do you think I’m strong enough?”

“Strong enough?”

“For my powers. For any of it.” The words come harder than expect, and my cheeks go hot, almost

embarrassed. “Because I don’t think you do. Yesterday, when you got mad, I think that’s the real reason

you were so scared I’d die using them. Why you’re so scared. Because, maybe, deep down, you think I’m

fragile. Some little breakable thing that needs saving. That can’t be trusted to handle what’s inside her without it killing her.” I make myself say the worst of it. “That I’m useless. Worthless. Without you, or without the wolf. That on my own, I’m just nothing.”

His whole body goes rigid under me.

“Don’t.” His voice comes out hard. “Don’t you ever use that word about yourself. Useless. Where the hell

did that come from?”

“Because it’s true.”

“It is not-”

“You might not say it.” I pull back to look at him, and now I’m the one with the hard edge, all the old wound

rising up at once. “But it’s what you think, isn’t it? It’s the why. You wouldn’t be this terrified of me reaching

for my power if some part of you actually believed I could hold it. You think it’ll just take me. Because I’m not strong enough. Because I’m a fragile stumbling fool who clawed her way out of one cage and straight into a prettier one, who can’t even-”

“Stop.”

He catches my face in both hands, and for once there’s nothing careful in it. He’s stung, the gold flaring sharp at the edges of his eyes.

“Is that what you think of me?” His voice is low and rough. “That I lie down next to you every night, that t

put my ring on your finger, that I would burn the world to the ground for you, and underneath all of it im sitting there thinking you’re nothing?” His jaw works. “You think that little of me. After everything”

“I think you’re scared.” I don’t back down. “And scared men lie to the people they’re scared for They call it protecting.”

That lands. I watch it land, watch it hit somewhere it hurts

But it doesn’t make him angry.

It makes him go still, that dangerous careful stillness, and I watch the sting drain out of his face and something slower take its place, because he’s heard it now

CHAPTER

LESS BY EVERY COMPARICION

Really heard it. The shape of the words. The way they’re too sharp, too rehearsed, too cruel to be mine

“These aren’t your words.” He says it quietly. “I know your words, Ember. I’ve spent every day since Alaska learning them. And this fragile, useless, nothing-this isn’t you. This is someone else talking through your mouth.” His thumbs move slowly across my cheekbones, and his voice gentles into something that frightens me more than the anger would have. “Somebody said this to you. Didn’t they?”

I don’t answer. I can’t.

“Something happened yesterday.” His eyes don’t leave mine. “Something happened yesterday. More than the bird, more than my temper. I can feel it on you.” His forehead comes down against mine. “So tell me, my love. What actually happened while I was gone?”

And I do.

It comes out of me in a flood, in my own words, the way I haven’t said it to anyone yet.

Hale at my door. The room she led me to. How it felt wrong from the second the door opened, the sheeted furniture, and how I went in anyway because I was desperate, because Rayana has days and I have nothing.
