CHAPTER 337: FIGHT SMART AND DIRTY
EMBER’S POV
“…Sapphire?”
“You channelled her before. On that bird. You reached in, and you pulled, and it nearly took your head of because you did it in a panic with no control. He circles me slowly. “So we do it here. On purpose. Unde control. You reach for her the way you reach for anything – deliberately – and you let just enough of her into your hands. Not a flood. A thread. You’re going to learn the difference between calling her and drowning in her, and you’re going to learn it in a room where the only thing you can hurt is me.”
“I don’t – I don’t know how to do it on purpose, it just-”
“Then find out.” There is no sympathy. None. “Close your eyes. Stop thinking about your hands. Go looking for the cold.”
I close my eyes.
And I go looking.
Down, into the place where she lives, past the noise and the ache in my shoulders, into the dark – and she’s there, she’s always there, that vast proud silver presence.
And I feel her turn toward me, feel her attention sharpen like a blade catching light, what, she seems to say, what do you want, flesh, and I reach for the edge of her the way you’d reach for the edge of something
enormous in the dark-
Cold floods up my arms. Silver. My hands sing with it, and my eyes fly open, and they’re glowing, I can see the light of them reflected in Knox’s face, and it is magnificent, and it is terrifying, and it is far, far too
much-
“Less,” Knox says sharply. “Ember. Pull back. A thread, not the whole-”
Panic hits me. Instead of easing off, I clamp down hard,

The silver gutters, surging violently in the wrong direction, and a crack splits the matted floor between us. Gasping, I yank myself out of her entirely. i just stand there, hands trembling, the cold draining out of my blood in a dizzying rush.
Silence.
Knox looks at the crack in the floor. He looks at me. And slowly, slowly, something that is almost a smile pulls at the corner of his mouth.
“There she is,” he says quietly
“I broke your floor.”
“You reached for her on purpose, and she came He steps over the crack, closing the distance, and takes

my shaking hands in his, and it’s the first time he’s touched me all morning that isn’t a correction, and i tender, turning my palms up, checking them. “That’s the whole game, baby. That’s the thing everyone’s afraid of, and you just did it standing up, on command, first morning. The control comes later. The reaching
most wolves train their whole lives to reach like that and never manage it.” His thumbs strok over my knuckles. “You’ve got a beast inside you. We’re just going to teach her to roar.”
The pride in his voice does something dangerous to my chest, and I have to look away from it.
“And when I can’t reach her?” I ask because I’m still shaking and i need the ground of a real question. “Yo said it yourself: I did it in a panic; I clamped down; I made it worse. What happens on a day when I can’t get to her at all? When I’m too tired, or too hurt, or something’s – I don’t know – something’s stopping me?” The cold thought slides in under the words. Someone knocks you out. Someone drugs you. “What do I do then?”
And Knox goes still, and something serious moves behind his eyes, and he lets go of my hands.
“Then you remember the most important thing I’m going to teach you today.” He steps back, resets his guard, but slower now, deliberate, a teacher arriving at the lesson that actually matters. “A wolf is only ever as good as its human. Everyone forgets that. They lean on the power, the shift, the teeth, and the day the
power fails them – and it will fail; everyone’s power fails eventually – they’ve got nothing, because they never learned to fight as what they actually are. Meat and bone and a will to live.” He beckons me in. “So we learn that too. Right now. How to end a fight when the wolf can’t help you. Because that’s the day it’ll
matter most.”
