TRADING MY CHEATING HUSBAND FOR THE LYCAN KING novel Chapter 460

CHAPTER 383: UGLY OLD HAG

EMBER’S POV

“That is enough, Knox Volkov.” Her breath saws against my ear. “Or I redecorate this floor with your girl’s skull. Drop the men, drop the chain, and get down. Now.”

Knox goes still.

He turns, slow, and takes in the sight of my own mother holding a gun to my

head.

“Let her go,” he growls, dropping the rogue in his grip and diving forward.

Bang.

The gunshot cuts through the casino noise. A bullet buries itself into the floorboards an inch from Knox’s brogues, stopping his charge instantly.

Devika grinds the hot barrel violently into the base of my skull. Before I can gasp, her free hand whips around my waist.

The cold, wicked edge of a hunting knife presses hard against my ribs, the tip digging through my dress and biting sharply into my skin.

“Get on the floor!” Devika shrieks, frantic and completely unhinged. “Do not play with me!”

My heart races, a frantic drumbeat hammering against my ribs.

“She’s bluffing, Knox,” I choke out, locking eyes with him.

“I am not,” Devika hisses, pressing the blade a fraction deeper. “You know me, Alpha. I don’t mind ending the life of this brat for everything she has put me through.”

Knox goes entirely still.

I watch him calculate the distance. The speed of his muscles against the twitch of her trigger finger.

He is evaluating the exact geometry of the moment, and then, something moves through those gold eyes that I have never seen there before and hope I never see again.

Fear.

He looks at me and gives a slow, negligible shake of his head.

Don’t move.

He lets the chain slide from his fingers. It hits the floor with a metallic crash.

He straightens without hurry, and he doesn’t raise his hands like a beaten captive; he lets them hang loose at his sides, holding Devika’s eyes the whole way down as he lowers. himself to one knee.

“Don’t pull that trigger, Devika,” Knox says, his voice a low, terrifying rumble. “I might be on my knees, but it would only take a second to rip your throat out.”

“It’d take less to kill her,” Devika spits back.

Knox’s jaw tightens. A muscle ticks violently under his blood-streaked skin.

He knows she is right, and we both hate it.

My heart races harder by the moment.

The sheer panic frays my concentration, completely muddling my focus as I desperately try to seize the reins of Sapphire’s power.

I claw for the silver, chasing it in the dark, but it slips right through my fingers. It is like searching for a single thread in a pitch-black room and coming up with handfuls of nothing.

It infuriates me.

In a crisis, she usually forces her way to the surface without me even having to ask. She just surges up on her own, taking over, pulling me into the magic and saving us both.

But right now? Nothing. She refuses to come out.

I have a gun pressed to my skull and a blade digging into my ribs, and the monster inside me is choosing this exact moment to leave me completely alone.

“There,” Devika breathes, greedy and triumphant. “There. Was kneeling and being such an obedient boy to your elder that difficult?”

Knox’s golden eyes go dead and flat.

“You’re a disgrace.”

Devika’s grip tightens on the knife, her breath hot against my ear.

“What was that?” she growls.

“You’re a disgrace to everything a mother is supposed to be,” Knox repeats, his voice dropping into a pleasant drawl that raises every hair on my arms. “Empty. Useless. Holding a blade to your own blood just to feel like you have a fraction of power.”

He tilts his head, looking up at her like she is nothing but dirt on his boots.

“Goddess help you, Devika. The only reason your heart is still beating is because she allows it. The millisecond you drop those weapons, I’m going to rip you apart so slowly you’ll beg me to finish it.”

“Shut up!” my mother shrills. “Shut the fuck up! You have absolutely no bloody idea what this brat has cost me! You have no idea-”

“Or what?” Knox cuts in, his voice cutting through her hysteria. “You’ll bore me to death with your tragic backstory?”

My eyes go wide. I stare at the kneeling King, my heart stalling in my chest as I realise exactly what he is doing.

He is drawing the aggro.

Knox lets out a dark, mocking laugh that echoes across the bloody floor.

“Don’t flatter yourself, Devika. We both know you aren’t angry about what she cost you. You’re just a washed-up, bitter hag suffocating on your own jealousy.” He looks her up and down, his lip curling in pure, undisguised disgust. “You look at your daughter, and you see everything you never were-younger, infinitely more beautiful, and actually desired by a King. You’re nothing but a pathetic, ageing witch, and it is eating you alive.”

Devika’s breath hitches. It is a direct strike to the only thing she truly cares about: her vanity.

Her entire fragile ego shatters.

“I’ll show you,” Devika breathes, her voice trembling with completely unhinged rage. “I’ll show you-”

In her blind, hysterical fury, she makes the fatal mistake.
