CHAPTER 388: WE CAME FOR THE TRUTH
EMBER’S POV
And I stare at him, this enormous, scarred rogue who eats crème caramel and threatens kings, and I feel something rip open in my chest, because I know that.
I know that feeling in my bones. I spent years trying to go back to a mother who threw me away because the alternative was having no one at all.
“I’m sorry,” Silas says.
I blink. “What?”
“For how she’s used you.” His dark eyes hold mine, and there’s so much depth in them. “I don’t know the whole of it yet. But I know my sister, and I heard what you said about slapping her, and I know it was ugly, and I know she must have deserved it.” His jaw tightens. “No blood of the Black line deserves to be handled like that. Not by anyone, and least of all by one of our own. You are not a thief’s mistake, girl, whatever she’s let you believe. You are family. And in this mountain, that word still means something, even if it stopped meaning anything to her.”
And I don’t have words. I have blood on my face and an uncle I met four minutes ago apologising to me for a lifetime of ruin, and my eyes sting, and I have to look away.
Silas turns, then, to Knox. And every gentle thing goes out of him.
“You,” he says. “The apology stops with her. Don’t wait on one.”
“I wasn’t holding my breath,” Knox says dryly.
“Good.” Silas folds his massive arms, and the two of them square up, the alpha king and the rogue lord, two enormous, dangerous men taking each other’s exact measure and finding it considerable. “Because I hate you, Volkov. I want that on the record before another word is said. I hate your crown. I hate your councils. I hate the whole shining world that spits on people like me and calls it law. If you’d walked in here as yourself, I’d have flayed you slow and served pastries to the crowd while I did it.”
“You’d have tried,” Knox says, unbothered. “You’d have lost men doing it. A great many. But you’re welcome to find out some other night, when there isn’t a woman between us both deciding whether it’s worth it.”
Silas studies him for a long beat. Then, grudgingly, the corner of his scarred mouth twitches.
“… You took a poison that halved your strength and walked into a mountain full of men who’d kill you for sport. And when it went wrong, you fought off fifty of them and held a gun to my sister’s head to keep her breathing.” His dark eyes flick to me, then back. “That’s not nothing. I hate you, King. But you keep your head tonight, because she’s my blood, and you bled for her in my house, and even a rogue pays a debt like that. Don’t mistake it for friendship. There’s no version of this world where we’re friends.”
“I’ve got enough friends,” Knox says. “I came for her, not for you”
“Good answer,” Silas rumbles.
And I have heard enough posturing between the two most dangerous men I’ve ever stood between, and

there is a clock running, and I am done waiting.

“Earlier, you asked why an Alpha would be foolish enough to willingly step into your mountain. Well, we came here for the truth” I say, and both of them turn. “That’s the whole reason. That’s why I put on this dress and lied my way into your mountain, Silas. Because I found out my whole life is a lie.” I turn to look at Devika, and my voice shakes with all of it. “The man I thought was my father isn’t. My blood isn’t what she told me it was. And she-” I point at my mother “-she has been lying to me since the day I was born, and there’s a wolf inside me she’s spent my whole life drugging asleep, and I need to know why, and who my father is, and what she’s been hiding me from. And she is the only person alive who knows.”
Silas goes very still. He looks at me, and then at Devika, and something dangerous settles over his face.
“Is that so?” His voice drops. “A father. A drugged wolf. Sit her down, someone, before she falls down – she’s swaying.” A rogue runs in and steadies me into a chair, and Silas turns to his sister. “Well, Devika? You heard the girl. Twenty-four years of questions. Give her the answers. All of them. You owe her that much and a great deal more.”
And Devika laughs.
It’s an ugly sound, high and brittle and defiant, and she folds her arms and lifts that chin, and there’s the mother I know, cornered and vicious and utterly without shame.
