CHAPTER 30: GOOD BYE, MOTHER–1
EMBER’S POV
“I warned you from the start that marrying that low–class nobody would be your downfall. I had Alphas lined up for you–wealthy, powerful men who could have given you everything. But no, you wanted love.” She spits the word like it’s dirty. “You chose that spineless pig over the future I built for you. So don’t you dare blame me for what he did. You made your choice. You lived with the consequences. It’s not my fault you couldn’t handle the realities of being an omega wife.”
“Handle the- he broke my ribs! He choked me until I passed out! He told me every day that I was worthless and stupid and lucky he didn’t kill me!”
“Then you should have been smarter about managing him.”
The words land like a physical blow. I actually stagger backward.
“That’s your response?” I whisper. “Your daughter tells you she was abused and you think she should have managed him better?”
Devika’s lip curls. “You always were dramatic. And if Gale knocked some sense into you occasionally, maybe you deserved it. You certainly had a mouth on you. Still do, apparently.” She gestures at the staring crowd. “This little tantrum right here? This is exactly why men lose their patience with you. You don’t know when to shut up.”
“Stop.” My voice cracks. “Just stop.”
I stare at her–this woman who raised me, who I spent my whole childhood trying to please, who I would have done anything to make proud–and I finally see her clearly.
Not as the mother I wanted, but as the mother she actually is.
Someone who only ever loved what I could provide.
Someone who saw me as a stepping stone, not a daughter.
Someone who chose status over my safety, appearances over my life.
