CHAPTER 32: JEALOUSY?-1
KNOX’S POV
The list is divided into categories in her elegant handwriting.
Some items are reasonable: seeing the Northern Lights, visiting her mother’s grave in Switzerland, having one last Christmas with people who matter.
Other items are transparently designed to insert herself back into my life: revisiting the restaurant in Manhattan where we first met, having one last dance at the New Year’s Eve ball, spending a day
reminiscing about what we were.
I see through it immediately. This is strategy disguised as sentiment.
The reasonable requests are the opening gambit, the things she knows I’ll agree to because denying a
dying woman seems monstrous.
And once I’ve agreed to those, the rest becomes easier to request, harder to refuse.
“Northern Lights,” I say. “The grave visit. That’s it.”
Her face crumples in a way that might be genuine.
“Knox. Please. I don’t have much time left. Can’t we just…”
“You left me at the altar for a Vogue cover.” I take a sip of my coffee. “I don’t think we need to revisit that.”
“It wasn’t like that-”
“It was exactly like that.” My voice is flat. Almost bored. “Three hundred guests. A ceremony scheduled for
noon. And my bride vanished the night before because Paris called with an opportunity she couldn’t refuse. Then you ghosted me for three months while I became the Lycan King who got publicly humiliated
by his model fiancée. Every supernatural tabloid ran the story for weeks.”
“I was twenty-five.” Her voice drops to something wounded. “I was stupid and scared and thought I’d have forever to come back to you. I thought you’d wait.”
“I did wait.” I set the cup down. “I called. I texted. I sent people to find you. For three months, I waited like a fool while you did magazine covers and pretended I didn’t exist.”
“And then you found Celeste.” She says the name carefully, like handling something fragile. “I heard about what happened. After. I reached out, but you never responded. I must have called a hundred times.”
“I know.”
“I wanted to be there for you. I wanted to help you through it”
