Wolves shouting at each other, pack members staring at Gale with expressions ranging from shock to pity to something that looks almost like recognition-like they always suspected but never wanted to know for
sure.
“I’m bisexual,” Gale says, his voice rising over the noise, trying to salvage something from the wreckage. “That doesn’t make me unfaithful. I still loved my wife. I still wanted our marriage to work. The physical
relationships I had on the side were just that-physical. They didn’t mean anything.”
“They didn’t mean anything,” Knox repeats flatly. “You cheated on your wife for eight years with multiple
partners and it didn’t mean anything. But her leaving you for one man-one time-after years of your abuse and lies… that’s the unforgivable betrayal?”
“I never abused her-”
“You’re a hypocrite and a liar,” Knox says, “and this council should weigh your testimony accordingly.”
He sits.
The chamber buzzes with whispered speculation. Gale’s credibility is damaged-maybe destroyed.
He’s no longer the wronged husband. He’s a man who cheated throughout his marriage but expects his
wife to face consequences for leaving him.
It should be enough. It should save us.
But when I look at Elder James, his expression hasn’t changed. He doesn’t look satisfied or uncertain or
swayed by the revelation.
He looks like someone watching a play he’s already seen, waiting for the final act to unfold exactly as he
expects.
He’s already made his decision. Nothing that happens in this chamber is going to change it.
“The council calls Ember Aragon to testify regarding the abuse allegations, Elder James announces
My legs barely support me as I stand.
The walk to the witness stand feels endless, every step watched by hundreds of eyes that have already decided what they think of me.
