CHAPTER 56: DR. MARIE MOREAU–2
“This is highly irregular
“This is proper procedure.” Catherine’s voice doesn’t waver. “Unless you’d like to explain to the council why you’re so eager to silence additional testimony?”
The gallery buzzes with renewed interest. James looks like he wants to murder Catherine with his bare hands, but he can’t refuse without making himself look even worse than he already does.
“Fine,” he spits. “Call your witness. But I warn you, Elder Catherine–if this is some kind of stalling tactic-”
“It’s not.”
The chamber doors open.
A woman enters–middle–aged, professional, carrying herself with the authority of someone who has seen
terrible things.
She’s wearing a simple navy dress, her dark hair pulled back, her expression calm and determined.
I recognize her instantly.
The room tilts. My vision blurs. For a moment, I think I’m hallucinating, that my desperate mind has
conjured a ghost from the worst night of my life.
But she’s real.
Dr. Marie Moreau.
The gynecologist who treated me that night two years ago. The woman who held my hand while I sobbed

“Dr. Moreau,” Elder Catherine says formally, “please take the stand.”
James is on his feet, his composure completely shattered.

former patient’s medical records had been tampered with. She has her own documentation–personal notes, backup files she kept because something about this case haunted her. She is prepared to testify about exactly what she witnessed on the night in question.”
“This is outrageous,” James sputters. “This is a clear violation of-”

James sits.
His face is the color of raw meat. His hands are shaking with rage. But he sits.
Dr. Moreau takes the witness stand with the composure of someone who has testified in difficult
circumstances before.
She looks at me for just a moment–a flash of recognition, of sympathy, of something that looks almost
like pride–before turning to face the council.
“Dr. Moreau,” Catherine begins, “please describe how Ember Crawford came to be your patient.”
“She was brought to the emergency room at Seattle General Hospital on December 24th, two years ago,”
Dr. Moreau says, her voice clear and clinical. “She was experiencing severe vaginal bleeding and
abdominal pain. She was approximately fourteen weeks pregnant at the time of admission.”
The gallery has gone completely silent.
“What did your examination reveal?”
“The patient was in the process of miscarrying. There was significant trauma to the abdominal area-
bruising consistent with a forceful impact. The pattern of the injuries suggested she had been pushed or
