CHAPTER 58: UNEXPECTED SAVIOR–2
She walks away before I can respond, leaving me standing in Knox’s arms with too many emotions and
not enough words.
Knox is silent beside me. His jaw is tight, his body tense with something that might be jealousy or might
be calculation.
“Montenegro,” he says flatly.
“I know.”
“He saved you.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
I don’t have an answer. Or rather, I have several answers, and none of them are ones Knox wants to hear.
“I don’t know,” I lie. “Maybe he just believes in justice.”
Knox’s expression says he doesn’t buy that for a second. But before he can press further, another figure
approaches.
Dr. Moreau.
She looks smaller up close than she did on the witness stand–a woman in her fifties with kind eyes and smile lines that suggest she’s spent her career trying to make terrible situations slightly less terrible.
When she reaches me, she pulls me into a hug without asking permission.
“I’m so proud of you,” she whispers against my hair. “For finally getting out. For telling the truth. For being
brave enough to fight.”
The tears start again. I thought I was done, but apparently my body has an unlimited supply of grief it’s
been saving for this moment.

“Thank you.” My voice breaks on the words. “Thank you for keeping those records. Thank you for coming
here. Thank you for-”
“You don’t need to thank me.” She pulls back, her hands on my shoulders, her eyes searching my face. “I’ve thought about you every day for five years. Wondered if you were okay. Wondered if you’d found the courage to leave. Wondered if I made the right choice by not reporting when you begged me not to.”
She takes a breath.
“When I heard what was happening at this Summit–when I realized someone had erased your records to prevent you from proving the truth–I knew I had to come. I couldn’t let them erase what I saw that night. I couldn’t let them call you a liar when I was there. When I held your hand while you bled.”
CHAPTER 58–ONEXPECTED SAVIOR–2
I’m crying too hard to respond.
–“But Ember.” Her voice goes serious. “I need to warn you about something.”
She glances around, making sure no one is close enough to overhea

“Someone tried to kill me last night. To prevent this testimony.” Her grip on my shoulders tightens.
“Whoever erased those hospital records didn’t just want to win a legal case. They wanted to make sure no
one could ever contradict their version of events. They were willing to commit murder to keep me silent.”
The ice in my blood spreads.
“Be careful,” Dr. Moreau continues. “Whoever wanted you silenced is still out there. This isn’t over. Winning
today doesn’t mean you’re safe. It means you’re a threat. And threats get eliminated.”
She hugs me one more time, presses a kiss to my forehead like a mother sending her child off to war, and
then she’s gone.
Knox and I stand alone in the emptying chamber.
“We need to talk,” he says quietly. “About what happens now.”
I nod, even though talking is the last thing I want to do. What I want is to collapse somewhere soft and
sleep for approximately one thousand years.
