Her remark caught him off guard.
Ryan narrowed his eyes slightly, meeting her gaze. He caught the trace of sarcasm and calculation in Rose’s eyes.
He remained silent.
The reason Rose had said something so shocking was simple: she wanted to disgust these people.
After all, she knew exactly what mattered most to them.
Daisy had spoken with complete self-righteousness, openly implying that Ryan would help them solve the problem. Her “name your price” comment was nothing more than a way of telling Rose that they intended to use her own “husband’s” money to buy her off.
Rose was genuinely astonished by their audacity.
Since they cared so much about Ryan, why didn’t they simply call their “son-in-law” over and show off their influence?
Why should she play along?
Her sudden and unexpected “honey” split the seemingly harmonious gathering straight down the middle.
Samantha’s eyes flashed with anger.
Instinctively, she glanced around. After all, some people already knew about the relationship between Rose and Ryan. She couldn’t openly lash out at Rose, or it would become a public relations disaster.
But Rose was simply shameless.
Knowing full well what kind of relationship existed between her and Ryan, she still called him that in public. She had absolutely no sense of boundaries.
“You—”
Daisy’s expression darkened as well, realizing that Rose was deliberately humiliating them.
“Rose, you can’t even manage your career properly. Why are you always thinking about being a pampered wife?”
Rose nearly laughed.
One word—honey—had made them this furious.
And now they were trying to put her in her place.
“Then what about your daughter, who’s always thinking about living off other people’s husbands and spending their money? A parasite? A leech? In that case, I certainly can’t compete with her ‘talent.’”
Rose was never one to back down in an argument.
Samantha’s expression grew even darker.
It would be a lie to say she wasn’t angry.
Rose was clearly mocking her.
Oliver was equally stunned.
How dare Rose do something like that?
In the past, Rose had never been allowed to take the initiative to get close to Ryan in public, let alone call him honey.
Seeing them speechless, Rose turned to leave with Diana.
But just as she turned around, she unexpectedly met Ryan’s gaze.
He still stood there with one hand in his pocket. As he looked at her, a faint, ambiguous smile appeared on his lips—half amusement, half mockery.
Rose frowned immediately.
His reaction unsettled her.
To be honest, during all the years of their marriage, she had never once called Ryan honey.
Now she had done it in front of Samantha.
He probably found it ironic.
Perhaps he was even angry.
Anger was exactly what she wanted.
She intended to provoke them.
She couldn’t be bothered with him and continued walking.
But Ryan suddenly spoke. “Are you going home today?”
He was asking Rose.
Samantha turned sharply to look at him, biting her lip.
Rose was also surprised by his sudden concern.
She replied simply, “No.”
“Alright.”
Ryan didn’t say another word.
He didn’t persuade her.
He didn’t coax her.
It felt like nothing more than empty politeness.
Completely insincere.
Before Rose could react, he had already turned and walked away.
Diana was furious. “What is he trying to do? It’s almost like he’s hoping you won’t go back.”
Rose understood.
But she shrugged indifferently. “It’s not my home anymore anyway.”
They hadn’t gone far when Oliver caught up with them.
His expression was complicated. “Rose, it’s just a matter of issuing a certificate. It can’t be that difficult, can it?”
He wanted to shift the focus away from the project and onto those two experts as quickly as possible.
