Arabella immediately understood her intention. “Mom, if you’re thinking of buying this for me, it’s really not necessary. I don’t really wear bracelets.”
“Just give me your hand first,” Florence replied, not addressing her objection and making a gentle beckoning gesture.
With no other choice, Arabella raised her hand.
Satisfied, Florence carefully fastened the clasp around her daughter’s wrist.
“You see? It looks absolutely lovely on you. It complements your outfit perfectly today,” Florence said, her eyes warm with affection.
“Mom, I’m genuinely not comfortable wearing jewelry. I appreciate the gesture, but I really can’t accept this…” Arabella began, moving to take the bracelet off.
Florence looked at her, her expression turning a shade more serious. “Don’t you dare take it off. Before, you weren’t accustomed to such things because no one in the Macdonald family ever provided for you properly.
“But now you’re home. I’m here to indulge you. It’s just a bracelet. I’ll buy you far more beautiful pieces.”
Arabella saw that behind Florence’s stern look was simply a heartfelt desire to pamper her. Insisting on removing it would only hurt her mother’s feelings. After a brief internal debate, Arabella relented.
“Alright, you’re right. It does go quite well with today’s outfit. I’ll wear it. Thank you, Mom,” Arabella said with a conceding smile.
“Now that’s more like my girl. It truly is beautiful on you,” Florence said, the sternness melting away into pure delight. The joy she felt in giving to Arabella seemed to surpass any pleasure from buying things for herself.
“Come along, let’s see what else they have,” Florence said cheerfully, taking Arabella’s hand to lead her further.
Just then, Arabella’s phone vibrated in her pocket.
She retrieved it to see Matthew’s name on the screen.

“Mom, please continue browsing. I need to take this call,” Arabella said, then stepped away to a quieter corner to answer.
“You mentioned yesterday you’d deliver the medicine. I haven’t seen you yet today.” Matthew’s voice came through, sounding expectant.
“I finished preparing it late yesterday, so I didn’t make it to the hospital. But there’s no need for concern. I should be able to bring it by around noon,” Arabella replied calmly.
“Don’t bother with a delivery. Where are you right now? I’ll come to you,” Matthew stated, unwilling to wait any longer.
“Fine. I’m at the Metropolitan Art Center. I’ll send you my location,” Arabella said, tapping to share her GPS pin immediately.
“Location sent. Call me when you arrive.” With that, Arabella ended the call.
Meanwhile, Florence had been drawn to an elegant handbag. As she was admiring its craftsmanship, she saw Arabella walking back. “Arabella, over here, dear.”
“What is it, Mom?” Arabella rejoined her.
“Try carrying this bag,” Florence said, handing it to her.
“Mom, I really don’t need another bag…”
Before Arabella could finish her sentence, Florence had already slung the strap over her daughter’s shoulder.
“Perfect. This bag suits your style exactly,” Florence declared, her eyes full of doting approval.
“Mom, I-”
“We’ll take this one,” Florence said, deftly ignoring Arabella’s attempted protest and turning to complete the purchase.
Watching Florence’s smooth, practiced motions, a realization dawned on Arabella. This outing. wasn’t merely about accompanying her mother to an exhibition; it was a thinly veiled excuse for Florence to shower her with gifts.

“Naomi, what do you think of this piece?” Ruby asked Naomi, her eyes gleaming.
Naomi glanced at the necklace in Ruby’s hand. “It’s acceptable.”
“Then I’ll try it on,” Ruby said with a pleased smile.
The sales associate assisted Ruby with the clasp and handed her a mirror.
Admiring the necklace at her throat, Ruby liked it more and more.
“Naomi, doesn’t it look stunning on me?” Ruby asked, turning to Naomi for validation.
Naomi responded offhandedly, “It’s fine.”
“Then I’m getting it,” Ruby announced, pulling out her credit card.
“Naomi, aren’t you going to choose anything for yourself?” Ruby asked, beaming.

“I haven’t seen anything that appeals to me yet,” Naomi replied, continuing to walk ahead. Part of her mind, however, was preoccupied with wondering what Florence and Arabella were doing.
As she wandered, a particular pendant in a glass case suddenly caught Naomi’s eye.
She moved closer to examine it. Noticing her interest, Ruby smiled. “Naomi, if you like it, you should try it on.”
