Freya looked toward the source of the voices she had heard–they were coming from the television mounted on the wall, which was playing a daytime drama.
Now she understood–the chatter she and Carter had been straining to hear at the door was just the TV.
A mix of anger and foolish relief washed over them. Freya and Carter sank into the visitor chairs and immediately turned their frustration on Edward. “Why on earth do you have the TV blaring so loudly?”
Edward looked at them, utterly bewildered by the sudden complaint.
Just then, Owen walked into the room and saw the two of them still seated. In an irritated tone, he urged them to leave. “What are you still doing here? This is a patient’s room. You need to leave. Now.”
He then turned to Edward, his expression apologetic. “I’m sorry about this, Edward. I don’t know who these people are, but they forced their way in. I’ll have them escorted out.”
“Did you hear me?” Owen addressed Freya and Carter again, his voice hardening. “If you don’t leave voluntarily, I will call security.”
Edward glanced at his parents, who were now pretending not to hear Owen. He was initially going to speak up, but then a thought struck him–why would they show up at the hospital to visit him so unexpectedly?
Remembering Freya’s furious phone call demanding Arabella’s address, the pieces clicked into place. They weren’t here for him; they were here to ambush Arabella.
With that realization, he decided to stay out of it. He simply ignored them and refocused his attention on the television, leaving it to Owen to handle the situation.
Seeing that his words had no effect and the pair showed no sign of moving, Owen turned to the nurse beside him, his expression displeased. “Call hospital security. Now. Tell them we have two unauthorized individuals refusing to leave a patient’s room.”
“Why are you being so unreasonable? We told you, we’re here to visit our son! You have no right to throw us out!” Freya snapped at Owen, seeing he was serious about calling security.
Owen looked pointedly at Edward, whose gaze remained fixed on the TV, not even acknowledging the visitors. “Save it. Leave now, and we can forget this happened. Once security arrives, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Seeing Owen wasn’t buying her story, Freya turned helplessly to Edward. “Edward, for goodness‘ sake, say something! Tell this doctor who we are!”
Edward only afforded Freya a brief, indifferent glance before turning back to the screen, clearly unwilling to intervene. If Owen could get rid of them, it saved him the trouble.
“Hey! What is wrong with you? Why won’t you speak up?” Freya pressed, her frown deepening as Edward continued to ignore her.
“That’s enough! Stop shouting,” Owen cut in coldly, his patience exhausted. “It’s obvious he doesn’t know you. Get out. Now. Nurse, remove them.”
The nurse, looking nervous, had no choice but to step forward. “Ma’am, sir, please, you need to leave. You’re disturbing the patient and interfering with medical care.”
But Freya and Carter acted as if they were deaf, remaining stubbornly planted in their chairs despite the nurse’s pleas.

The nurse’s face flushed with frustration. “Dr. Lewis, they’re refusing to leave. What should we do?”
Owen shot an angry look at the intruders. “Go see what’s taking security so long.”

The nurse hurried out into the hallway just as two security guards were approaching. She waved them over. “Over here, please!”
The guards picked up their pace. “What’s the situation?”
“Please, come in. There are two individuals in this room who forced their way in and won’t leave,” the nurse explained quickly.
After hearing the details, the guards entered the room and positioned themselves near Freya and Carter. One of them, a burly man, spoke with firm authority. “This is a restricted patient area. You need to come with us, please.”
