Seeing it was Lucas calling, Arabella answered. “Lucas.”

“I’m near your office. It’s almost lunch–want to grab a bite together?” Lucas invited her directly.

“You went out?” Arabella asked, her brow furrowing slightly.

“I just came from a follow–up at the hospital. All my results came back clear,” Lucas said, sounding a little pleased with himself.

He’d known Arabella would ask, so he’d made sure to get checked first.

Hearing that, Arabella felt a bit more at ease. “Well, in that case, okay.”

“I’ll swing by and pick you up,” Lucas said happily.

“Mm–hmm.” Arabella agreed and hung up.

Chloe came into the office. “Ms. Hamilton, it’s almost noon. Would you like me to order some lunch for you?”

“No need. I’m meeting a friend,” Arabella told her.

“Alright, got it,” Chloe replied.

Arabella stood up. “Call me if anything comes up.”

“Don’t worry, Ms. Hamilton. I’ll keep an eye on things here. If anything urgent comes up that I can’t handle, I’ll contact you right away,” Chloe assured her.

“Mm.” Arabella gave a smiling nod, then left her office.

Downstairs, Lucas was already waiting in his car.

“Arabella, over here!” Lucas rolled down the window and waved to her.

A smile touched her eyes as Arabella walked over. “Didn’t expect you to bounce back so fast.”

“Just some scrapes and bruises,” Lucas said with a grin. “Hop in. Lunch is on me.”

Arabella got in and settled into the passenger seat. “We’re definitely eating, but I’m buying.”

“How can I let you do that?” Lucas instinctively tried to refuse.

“You got hurt saving me last time. The least I can do is buy you a meal,” Arabella insisted.

“Now it sounds like you don’t see me as a friend,” Lucas complained.

Arabella smiled. “It’s because you’re a friend that a meal is enough. Otherwise, I’d owe you a proper thank–you gift.”

“That’s settled, then. Today is my treat. If you want to pay, you can get the next one.”

Hearing that, Lucas had to give in. “Alright, it’s a deal. Next time is on me.“.

“Sure.” Arabella agreed with a smile.

Lucas started the car. “So, where to?”

“The Starlight Plaza. There’s an art exhibition there I wanted to see,” Arabella said.

“Great, Starlight Plaza it is!” The thought of going to the exhibition together after lunch made Lucas‘ eyes light up.

Arabella didn’t think much of it and simply asked, “What about you? Do you have other plans after lunch?”

“Nope. I’d like to see the exhibition too,” Lucas replied immediately.

She glanced at him. “Fine, then.”

Soon, they reached the plaza.

“What are you in the mood for–something like a burger place, or maybe a foreign cuisine?” Lucas asked Arabella.

Arabella looked around and decided. “Let’s go for the foreign one.”

“Works for me,” Lucas agreed.

The two headed toward the restaurant.

“Arabella, Lucas–what are you two doing here?” Ruby’s voice stopped them, sounding surprised.

Frowning slightly, Arabella retorted coolly, “Are we not allowed to be here?”

“I meant, why are you two together?” Seeing Arabella and Lucas side by side made Ruby’s temper flare.

Arabella raised an eyebrow and gave Ruby a dismissive look. “None of your business.”

With that, she stepped around Ruby and started walking away.

Lucas promptly followed Arabella.

Ruby instinctively grabbed Lucas‘ arm. “Wait.”

Lucas frowned. “Let go!”

“Just hear me out.” Ruby released his arm, her tone softening a little. “I’m here to eat too. Can I join you?”

“No.” Before Arabella could even speak, Lucas flat–out refused.

He didn’t want anyone ruining his chance to be alone with Arabella.

Ruby’s face paled, but she kept her composure. “It’s just for company. I won’t say anything out of line.”

“Hmph. Don’t think we don’t know what you did. I’m not eating with you, and I definitely don’t want to end up in the hospital again,” Lucas said, his voice tinged with disgust.

Narrowing her eyes, Ruby curled her lips into a vicious smirk. “Arabella, so it was you who set me up last time, wasn’t it?”

Even without proof, she was convinced it had to be Arabella.

And Arabella hadn’t even bothered to hide it last time–that was her warning.

Fuming, Ruby turned on her heel and stalked off in the opposite direction.

Arabella and Lucas entered the restaurant and were shown to a table.

“Didn’t expect to run into her. What a mood–killer,” Lucas said, his expression full of distaste.

Arabella couldn’t be bothered to spare Ruby another thought. She handed the menu to Lucas. “See what looks good to you.”
