“So, Mom, what are you going to do next?” Harper asked, unable to contain her curiosity.

Freya smiled faintly. “You don’t need to worry about these matters. Just focus on looking lovely every day and doing whatever makes you happy.”

“But I want to help,” Harper whined, shaking Freya’s arm playfully.

Unable to resist her daughter’s persistence, Freya finally asked, “You really want to be involved?”

“Yes!” Harper looked at her mother with wide, expectant eyes.

Freya patted her hand. “If you truly want to help, then listen to me–try to limit your contact with Dylan as much as possible.” “Huh?” Harper was confused. “Why?”

“Silly girl, everything I’m doing right now is for your future,” Freya explained patiently. “You’ll understand when you’re older.”

As for the deeper, more calculating reasons, she couldn’t reveal them to Harper yet.

After all, Harper was still emotionally attached to Dylan. If Dylan caught wind of Freya’s true intentions, she could easily end up in a weak position, or even see her plans completely unravel.

“Mom, I only love Dylan. I’m definitely going to marry him,” Harper insisted stubbornly.

Freya glanced at her daughter and sighed, shaking her head. “Oh, you foolish child.”

“Mom, if you don’t approve of Dylan, I’ll never forgive you,” Harper warned, her tone petulant.

Freya didn’t respond directly and instead changed the subject. “Have some fruit.”

“Mom!” Harper was annoyed. It felt like her mother simply wasn’t taking her feelings seriously.

Freya rubbed her temples, feeling the beginnings of a headache. “I’m just giving you advice, that’s all.”

Oh well. Once Harper is introduced to young men from more suitable families in the future, she’d naturally see where her best interests lay.

Seeing that Freya wasn’t pressing the issue further, Harper reluctantly picked up the fruit plate.

“Eat up. You look like you’ve lost weight lately,” Freya remarked.

“I’m watching my figure. I want to look perfect in my wedding dress,” Harper replied, her face lighting up with dreamy anticipation.

Freya could only shake her head in silent resignation and began eating some fruit with her daughter.

After returning to her office, Arabella received a call from Colton.

“I have the results from the inquiry you requested,” Colton said.

“Who was it?” Arabella asked.

“Mr. Stewart,” Colton answered plainly.

Arabella was taken aback. “It was actually him!”

“Yeah, I was a bit surprised too,” Colton said, his tone implying more than his words. “Any idea why Mr. Stewart would intervene like that?”

“I have no idea,” Arabella replied, feeling a ripple of unease.

Why would Matthew suddenly target Calvin?

“Heh,” Colton teased playfully. “Guess what? Maybe Mr. Stewart has a soft spot for you!”

“Don’t talk nonsense! That’s impossible!” Arabella warned him sharply.

Colton continued, undeterred. “Well then, maybe Mr. Stewart was just playing the Good Samaritan?”

“Or it could simply be a business rivalry,” Arabella offered as a more rational explanation.

“If it weren’t for you, Mr. Stewart probably wouldn’t even know Calvin exists.” Colton pointed out with a shrug. Calvin and Matthew simply didn’t operate in the same stratosphere for there to be any direct competition.

Arabella was left momentarily speechless. That was undeniably true.

But the notion that Matthew liked her? Absolutely out of the question.

“Alright, enough gossip. If Matthew finds out you’re speculating like this, he might make life very difficult for you in this city,” Arabella said before ending the call.

Listening to the dial tone, Colton smirked to himself. “Sounded a bit flustered, didn’t she?”

But if Matthew didn’t care about Arabella, would he really go out of his way to do something like that?

Of course, since Arabella had told him to drop it, he’d better listen.

Putting the thought aside, Colton returned to his work.

Arabella set her phone down, her thoughts slightly scattered.

She certainly didn’t believe Colton’s silly theory, but she still couldn’t puzzle out Matthew’s true motivation.

After turning it over in her mind, Arabella decided to call Ethan.

“Ethan, it was Matthew who sabotaged Calvin’s deal,” Arabella said without preamble.

“It was actually him!” Ethan sounded genuinely surprised.

“Yes. I just can’t figure out why he would do it,” Arabella admitted.

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line.

“Arabella, have you and he been… getting along well recently?” Ethan couldn’t help asking.

“Uh…” Arabella seemed to catch his implication and quickly denied it. “No, not at all. Aside from the occasional unavoidable interaction, we haven’t been in contact.”

“If you say so,” Ethan replied, his voice tinged with a note of relief.

Arabella couldn’t help a soft laugh. “Ethan, what exactly are you imagining?”

Why was everyone jumping to such far–fetched conclusions?

“Nothing,” Ethan said. “Since it was him, then it’s fine. I think we should just let the matter rest and not look into it any further.”

Knowing Matthew was behind it actually put his mind at ease. At least they didn’t have to worry about some unknown third party lurking in the shadows, watching them.

“Alright, I understand,” Arabella agreed.

“I’ll see you at home tonight, then.”

“Okay.”

After hanging up, Arabella let out a quiet sigh.

Even though Ethan said to drop it, the fact remained that Matthew had intervened on her behalf. She really ought to at least thank him properly.

After a moment’s consideration, Arabella decided to call Matthew and ask if she could take him out for a meal as a gesture of thanks.

But before she could dial, her phone rang first.
