“She’s my cousin,” Naomi explained.

The nurse shook her head. “You’re related, but you’re as different as night and day.”

“Say that again!” Ruby seethed, her anger boiling over.

Naomi quickly took her arm. “Let’s just go. I’ll take you home.”

“Naomi, did you hear what she said?” Ruby whined, feeling deeply wronged.

“Just ignore it,” Naomi said, though she secretly felt pleased by the nurse’s comment about her.

Naomi frowned. “Ruby, you used to like Lucas a lot. Why are you talking about him like this now?”
