Watching Naomi leave, Florence frowned. “Why do I feel like both of them are off today?”
“Mom, Ruby’s probably just down because of her medical results,” Alfred reminded her.
Florence shook her head. “She’s not acting like someone with a real mental health issue. Don’t worry, she’ll be fine.”
“It doesn’t matter what we think. She has to believe she’s okay herself. Otherwise, even if nothing’s wrong, she’ll convince herself there is.” Alfred shrugged. Not much they could do about that.
Florence sighed. “Let’s figure out Ruby’s situation tomorrow when your aunt and uncle get back.”
“That’s really all we can do,” Ethan agreed.
Frank looked at Arabella. “Arabella, you’re the one with medical training. Why don’t you take a look at Ruby?”
“She wouldn’t go for that,” Arabella said calmly.
Ruby had been here since yesterday. When she felt unwell, she went to the hospital instead of asking Arabella for help–that pretty clearly meant she had no intention of letting Arabella examine her.
And since Ruby hadn’t come to her, Arabella wasn’t about to insert herself into the situation.
Besides, no one understood Ruby’s condition better than she did.
“But don’t worry. Even without examining her, her symptoms really do just look like exhaustion from sleep deprivation. A few good nights‘ rest and she’ll be fine.” Arabella wanted to put everyone at ease.
She didn’t want Ruby’s issues to ruin the mood.
Hearing that, everyone did seem to relax a bit.
“That’s good to hear. I’ll call your aunt and uncle later, let them stop worrying,” Florence said.
“Okay.” Arabella nodded.
Dinner was winding down, and everyone gradually headed to their rooms.
“Arabella, I need to talk to you.” Alfred followed her back to her room.
“What’s up, Alfred?” Arabella asked.
Alfred gave a knowing smile. “Ruby… You know something about that, don’t you?”
“Why would you say that, Alfred?” Arabella didn’t admit it, but she looked away.
That only confirmed Alfred’s suspicion. “Don’t forget what I do for a living.”
He hadn’t paid much attention at first, but Arabella’s behavior today had tipped him off.
Hearing that, Arabella’s lips curved into a smile. “Nothing gets past you, Alfred.”

“It was me. A while back…” Arabella gave him the short version–Ruby sending her that threatening package, and her response of hacking Ruby’s phone and installing some malware.
“You actually know how to do that?!” Alfred was genuinely shocked.
Arabella blinked. “Alfred, isn’t your focus a little off here?”
“Shouldn’t you be asking about my issues with Ruby? Why are you zeroed in on the malware?” She felt a bit exasperated.
Alfred waved it off. “Ruby brought that on herself. You were nice not to report her to the cops.
“But how do you know how to hack someone’s phone?” Compared to Ruby’s situation, he was way more curious about this.
He’d only had a suspicion and came to confirm it.
He hadn’t expected to stumble onto this.
“I picked up a few things from a friend a while back. Just the basics,” Arabella said casually.
“Just the basics from a friend, and you’re this good? That friend of yours must be some kind of genius hacker,” Alfred said, impressed.
‘She’s pretty talented,” Arabella agreed, relieved internally.
Good thing Alfred bought it. That is close.
‘Nice. Having a friend like that means you can learn even more from her,” Alfred said, a little envious. “I’d love it if she could teach ne sometime.”
Arabella was half amused, half exasperated. “Alfred, don’t tell me you don’t already know this stuff.”
‘I know some basics too, but I get the feeling your friend is way ahead of me,” Alfred said sincerely.
‘Then I’ll ask her if there’s ever a chance,” Arabella said, not wanting to commit further.
Alfred looked satisfied. “Great. Hope it works out.”
‘Anyway, it’s late. I’ll let you rest.” Alfred headed for the door.
Okay, good night, Alfred,” Arabella said.
‘And Ruby… Make sure she actually learns something from this.” He added that reminder before leaving.
Arabella shook her head, smiling. Alfred was something else entirely.
“Naomi, did you see how smug Arabella was? It’s so annoying.” Ruby complained gloomily.
“She got results. It makes sense,” Naomi said quietly.
Ruby scoffed. “Please. You’ve won plenty of awards before too. I never saw you show off like that.”
“That’s different.” Naomi didn’t want Ruby to keep poking at old wounds, so she changed the subject. “Did you take your meds?

“Yeah.” Ruby looked defeated. “They’re not going to put me in a psych ward, are they?”
She was genuinely terrified. If that happened, her life would be over.

“Don’t say that. You’ll be fine.” Naomi tried to comfort her. “Your parents will be back tomorrow. They can take you to a better hospital for a second opinion. Maybe this was all a misdiagnosis.”
“Naomi, honestly, I’m more scared of my dad,” Ruby said, her face pale.

I started the novel with great interest. In the beginning the storyline was captivating. Then I feel that the more the story advances, the twists were no longer great. Moreover I don't like Arabella s personality, cold, distant......
