Ruby let out a long sigh. “So what are you gonna do? Just stay here, mope around, and hand the company back to them like that?”
If Naomi lost her company, who was going to keep funding all those fancy dinners, weekend trips, designer bags, and jewelry? Ruby had gotten used to that lifestyle.
Naomi’s voice came through the phone, small and uncertain. “I don’t know.”
“You can’t just give it back,” Ruby said quickly. “Why don’t you pack a bag and leave? Make a statement. As long as you hold onto the company, what do you have to worry about? And without them breathing down your neck, you’d still have a shot at Mr. Stewart.”
Naomi’s voice dropped to a murmur. “You really think I still have a chance?”
Ruby pressed on. “Of course you do–if you get out of that house. But if you stay there with them watching your every move, you won’t be able to do anything.”
Naomi’s face went pale on the other end of the line. “You’re right. I can’t just sit here and do nothing.”
A knock came at the door.
“Naomi? Honey?” Florence’s voice was soft, careful. “I made you some soup. You barely touched dinner–please try to eat a little.”
Naomi ended the call quickly, pulled the covers up, and lay down. “Mom, I’m already in bed. I’m not hungry.”
Florence didn’t leave. “I brought it all the way up. Just a few bites, okay? You’ll feel better.”
“Mom, really, I don’t want any. I’m already lying down, about to fall asleep.”
There was a pause. Then Florence sighed. “Alright. If you get hungry in the middle of the night, you know where the kitchen is.”
“Okay. Thanks, Mom.”
Florence’s footsteps faded down the hallway. Naomi waited until she couldn’t hear them anymore, then let out a slow breath.
She glanced at her phone, jaw tightening. Something flickered in her eyes–something
determined.
