“Alright, I’ll let the manager at the pharmaceutical plant know,” Chloe replied with a smile. “After what we learned last time, production should run without a hitch.”
“Make sure quality is up to standard, and if there’s overtime, remember to take care of the team’s bonuses,” Arabella added.
“Will do,” Chloe said before turning to leave.
Arabella tidied the documents on her desk and allowed herself a faint smile. “Frank’s been away for a few days now–he should be back soon.”
Just then, her phone rang.
She glanced at the number, her brow furrowing slightly in recognition before she answered. “Mom?”
“Arabella, Ruby suddenly collapsed and was taken to the ER,” Florence said, her voice edged with concern.
“It’s going to be okay, Mom. Try not to worry. She’ll come around after some rest. The hospital staff knows what they’re doing,” Arabella reassured her.
Florence paused briefly before asking, “Arabella, you mentioned earlier Ruby might come to you for help in a couple of days… Do you know something about this?”
Before Arabella could respond, another voice came through the line. “Arabella, it’s Aunt Sophia.”
“Hi, Aunt Sophia,” Arabella replied gently. “Please don’t worry too much. Just follow the doctors‘ advice. She’ll be fine.”
“I know,” Sophia sighed. “And I know I shouldn’t be bothering you with this. Ruby brought it on herself, honestly–she doesn’t deserve your help. But since you’re training under that renowned specialist… I thought if you could check on her, we’d all feel better.”
“Aunt Sophia, trust me on this. She really is going to be okay. She’ll wake up soon,” Arabella said calmly.
In the background, a nurse’s voice called out, “Family of the patient? She’s awake. The doctor would like to speak with you.”
“We’ll be right there,” Sophia responded.
Florence’s voice returned to the phone. “Arabella, Ruby’s conscious now. We’ll go see her first and I’ll call you back later, alright?”
“Sure,” Arabella said.
After hanging up, Arabella’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. So Ruby finally reached her limit.
“Doctor, what’s wrong with my daughter? Why did she pass out like that?” Sophia asked, her tone anxious.
“From the test results, it looks like severe sleep deprivation. She hasn’t been getting proper rest,” the doctor explained. “Has she been under a lot of stress lately?”
“Not that I know of… Everything seemed normal,” Sophia said, frowning as she tried to recall.

“Then why is her insomnia this severe?” the doctor pressed, sounding puzzled.
Sophia turned toward Ruby. “Is there something going on that you haven’t told us?”

“What else could it be? I told you–there are noises in my room at night, but none of you takes me seriously,” Ruby snapped irritably.
“It’s not that we don’t believe you, honey. We checked the room, we had someone stay over, we even let you switch bedrooms. We tried everything. But you’re the only one who hears these sounds. No one else does,” Sophia replied, her voice tinged with helplessness. It wasn’t for lack of trying–she just didn’t know what else to do.
“Ruby, could it be… anxiety–related?” Florence suggested carefully.
Sophia nodded slowly. “Maybe. Let’s ask the doctor for a referral to run some tests.”
“Why won’t any of you just listen to me?” Ruby cried out in frustration.
“Alright, sweetie, calm down. Getting upset won’t help,” Sophia said softly, placing a hand on her arm. Ruby had just woken up, and Sophia didn’t want her passing out again.
“The doctor said you need more rest. Let’s get you back to your room so you can lie down for a while,” Florence said gently. She caught Sophia’s eye and guided Ruby out into the hallway.
Understanding the cue, Sophia stayed behind and asked the doctor quietly, “So what’s really going on with my daughter?”
“Physically, all her labs look normal. She just needs sleep. But…” The doctor hesitated. “If what she’s describing is truly happening to her, it’s going to be very hard for her to rest, and that will delay her recovery.”
“What should we do, then?” Sophia asked, her eyes filled with worry.
“We need to find a way to help her sleep soundly,” the doctor said.
“But we’ve tried everything we can think of. I really don’t know what else to do,” Sophia admitted, looking distressed.
yell…” The doctor thought for a moment. “I’ll prescribe a mild sleep aid for now and we’ll see how she responds.”
Okay,” Sophia said, then added, “Is there anything else we could try?”
Even if medication worked, she couldn’t rely on it forever, could she?
And there was no guarantee it would even help. She sighed inwardly.
“I’ll jot down a few suggestions you can try at home–white noise machines, relaxation exercises, that sort of thing. But I have to be honest, they may or may not work,” the doctor said as he wrote. Then he looked up kindly. “Ma’am, if nothing improves… I’d recommend she see a psychiatrist.”
“What do you mean?” Sophia’s face paled slightly.
“From what you’ve told me, you’ve exhausted all practical options, and the patient is still experiencing this, it’s possible she’s having auditory hallucinations, and sometimes that can relate to underlying mental health concerns,” the doctor explained gently.

I started the novel with great interest. In the beginning the storyline was captivating. Then I feel that the more the story advances, the twists were no longer great. Moreover I don't like Arabella s personality, cold, distant......
