“Are you trying to back out of your word, Dr. Hamilton? Or were those just empty promises to brush me off?” Matthew’s voice came through, cool and detached.

“I kind of expected you to say something like, ‘Don’t worry about it, it’s no big deal. But of course, you took it literally.”

“Why wouldn’t I? It’s not like we’re close or anything,” Matthew replied, his tone layered with meaning.

“Okay, fine. Even–Steven works for me,” she said, though the phrasing felt a bit off as soon as it left her mouth.

Matthew seemed annoyed by that and ended the call abruptly.

Arabella stared at her phone, puzzled. “What’s been up with him lately? So touchy.”

Shaking her head, she pushed the thought aside and dialed Edward.

“Arabella,” Edward answered.

“Hey, there’s a finance industry gala tonight. I’ll text you the address–make sure you’re there on time,” she reminded him.

“Got it,” Edward said, then hesitated. “But how did you manage to get an invite?”

“Mr. Stewart hooked me up,” Arabella explained casually. “I figured an event like this could be useful for you, so I asked him for one.”

“Thanks. You’re always looking out for me,” Edward said gratefully, then added, “You sure it wasn’t any trouble for him?”

“None at all. Someone like him just has to show his face and he’s in,” she said lightly.

She had no doubt Matthew could get an invitation without lifting a finger.

If she hadn’t needed to keep a low profile, she could’ve scored one herself–let alone him.

“Alright, I’ll be there tonight,” Edward confirmed.

With everything arranged, she felt pretty satisfied.

She wasn’t interested in going herself, but at least she could help her brother out.

Arabella had been swamped all afternoon. She stood up from her desk and stretched her shoulders slowly.

“Knock, knock.”

The door opened, and Chloe stepped in. “Ms. Hamilton, Mr. Stewart is waiting for you downstairs.”

Arabella checked the time. “Right. I’ll head down now.”

“Of course,” Chloe replied before leaving.

Arabella tidied up her desk, grabbed her bag, and made her way out of the office.

Downstairs, Andy immediately stepped forward and opened the car door for her. “Dr. Hamilton.”

“Thanks.” She nodded politely and slid into the back seat.

She settled in, glanced at Matthew, and stayed quiet.

Matthew also seemed distant. He gave her a brief look before turning his gaze out the window.

Andy sighed inwardly. Mr. Stewart, if you keep this icy act up, you’re gonna push her away.

“Andy, aren’t you getting in?” Arabella asked, breaking the silence.

Snapping out of it, Andy quickly took the passenger seat and told the driver, “Let’s go.”

The car pulled away from the pharmaceutical company, and an awkward tension settled inside.

Trying to lighten the mood, Andy chimed in, “Dr. Hamilton, Mr. Stewart already picked out an evening gown for you. We’ll stop by to try it on, and a stylist is scheduled to come by as well.”

Arabella glanced toward Matthew. “If Mr. Stewart went through the trouble, I’ll go with his choice.”
