Chapter 519 Ruby Taken Away

Even though it hurt her, Florence understood that Ruby was truly in the wrong.

“Alright, we should head out,” Florence said, giving Sophia’s shoulder a reassuring pat.

Sophia pressed her lips together and gave a slight nod.

“Ruby, please cooperate with the investigation. Don’t keep going down this path,” Sophia told her daughter seriously.

“Aunt, don’t worry–I’ll go with her. I’ll try to talk some sense into Ruby,” Naomi said gently.

Arabella raised an eyebrow at Naomi. “You really should go. And while you’re at it, maybe explain why you allowed Ruby to keep a dog in your apartment when you’re allergic to pet hair. And why Ruby was calling David from your place.”

“Naomi actually said no at first,” Ruby explained. “I just brought the dog over when I came by. And shortly after, it died. So it didn’t really affect Naomi at all.”

“Then,” Arabella turned to Ruby, “what happened to the dog after it died?”

“I threw it away. It was dead–why would I keep it?” Ruby replied matter–of–factly.

A faint, cold smile touched Arabella’s lips. “Important evidence like that, and you didn’t keep it.”

Ruby held up the medicine bottle. “The evidence is right here.”

“Just that?” Arabella let out a sarcastic laugh. “Go ahead and hand that over to the police, then. Let’s see if it holds up.”

Having said her piece, Arabella had no interest in engaging further with Ruby. She turned to Ethan. “Are the police almost here?”

“They should be any minute,” Ethan replied.

Arabella nodded. “Alright. Let them take her. I’d like to go home and rest, too.”

Even though she’d suspected Ruby might try something, now that it had actually happened, she felt drained.

“Go ahead home. I’ll handle things here,” Ethan said softly, giving her shoulder a gentle pat.

“She’s directly involved–how can she just leave?” Ruby protested.

Ethan shook his head. “Right now, the only one directly involved is you.”

Ethan explained calmly, “You’re the one claiming the medicine was poisoned. The burden is on you to prove Arabella tampered with it. But the evidence that you falsely accused her is solid. So you’re the one who needs to go with the police and cooperate with their investigation.”

“Save it for the police,” Ethan said, not wanting to waste another word.

Florence and Jonathan were about to leave when they noticed Arabella preparing to go as well. “Arabella, come home with us,” Florence offered.

“Okay.” Arabella agreed, moving to join them.

Naomi stopped Florence. “Mom, I’d like to come home for a visit too. Can I ride with you?”

“That’s not necessary. You must be tired–go back and get some rest,” Florence replied evenly, her tone polite but firm.

Naomi’s face went pale. She knew Florence still blamed her.

“Mom, really, I’m not tired,” Naomi insisted, hoping to return and smooth things over before her parents‘ disappointment deepened.

“Naomi, maybe another day. Even if you’re not tired, Mom and Dad are,” Ethan interjected gently.

“Ethan, I…” Naomi’s eyes reddened. She bit her lip lightly as she looked at him.

Ethan used to dote on her the most, but things had clearly changed.

“You should go on home,” Frank added quietly.

Naomi could only nod. “Alright.”

“Mom, Dad, I won’t join you today then. After you’ve rested, I’ll come by and see you,” she said, putting on her well–behaved demeanor again.

“Okay. Take care,” Florence replied.

One by one, they filed out of the hospital room.

Ethan glanced at Ruby. “Let’s wait outside. No need to disturb Uncle’s rest in here.”

Ruby stayed silent but followed him out.

Ethan looked at Sophia. “Aunt, I’ll call you as soon as there’s any news.”
