"So what's our next move?" Sarah asked, her voice tight with worry. "What was Mr. Stewart getting at? Is he seriously going to shield that spoiled girl?"

"Tch." Zack shot her a sharp look. "Right now we should be worrying about our own necks. That girl? Forget her. She's a lost cause."

Did she really have the bandwidth to care whether Matthew was protecting Arabella at a time like this?

"Matthew isn't going to just drop this. We need to figure out how to get through it," Zack said, his expression darkening.

Sarah's face fell. "Wait—you mean he's not just protecting her... he's coming after us, too?"

"But why?" Sarah pressed, frustration creeping into her tone. "What's so special about her to him?"

"What's the point of rehashing that now?" Zack cut her off. "I'll make some calls, see if there's any room to negotiate."

"But this is Matthew Stewart we're talking about," Sarah said, her face going pale. "Once he's decided something, who could possibly change his mind?"

She still couldn't wrap her head around how they'd ended up on Matthew's bad side in the first place.

"Still beats sitting around waiting to get steamrolled," Zack snapped. He pushed himself up from the couch and strode out of the room.

Sarah sank back into the cushions, drained and utterly lost.

Matthew's injury had been treated and dressed.

"I told you, it's just a scratch," Matthew said, eyeing the thick bandage wrapped around his forearm with a mix of amusement and exasperation.

Arabella gave him a pointed look. "If we didn't clean it properly, you could've gotten an infection. That's no joke."

"Alright, alright. It's handled exactly how you wanted," Matthew conceded.

Only then did Arabella seem to relax. "Good. Just take it easy at home for a few days, and you'll be fine."

Even though the wound truly wasn't serious, he'd gotten hurt because of her. A pang of guilt lingered in her chest.

"How did you even know where to find me?" Arabella asked, confusion in her eyes.
