Delivering one final, echoing slap, Madeline released her grip. Denise completely lost her balance and collapsed heavily onto the marble floor.
The onlookers were absolutely stunned.
Even Lucy froze in her wheelchair, her mind unable to process the sheer speed of the escalation.
Lincoln leaped to his feet, but Madeline had moved with such ruthless efficiency that he hadn't even had time to intervene.
Madeline crouched down with excruciating slowness. Completely ignoring the murderous, crazed hatred radiating from Denise's eyes, she pinched Denise's chin, tilted her face side to side, and coldly admired her own handiwork.
"Denise! Madeline, how... how could you do something like this? You've gone way too far!" Alianna, who was standing closest, rushed over and crouched down to help Denise. Madeline immediately swatted her reaching hands away.
A mocking, contemptuous smirk curled Madeline's lips. "You wanted an apology, and I have no problem giving you one. As long as you can stomach it, I've got plenty more to serve."
"You!" Denise's chest heaved with violent, ragged breaths.
"Next time you decide to play the hero for someone else, make sure you actually have what it takes. Don't act as a human shield, smiling like an idiot while thinking you're so powerful, only to end up a massive laughingstock. It's truly pathetic."
"Ah!" Denise slapped Madeline's hand away and sat on the floor, shrieking in a total, unhinged frenzy. "Someone! Help! Security! Grab this bitch! Madeline, I swear to God I'm going to kill you! I'm going to kill you!"
"Enough!"
Standing by the second-floor railing, Christian looked down at the chaotic scene with an imposing, thunderous authority.
"Grandpa, Madeline hit me!"
Denise scrambled to her feet, clutching her bruised, swollen cheek, and immediately began whining to Christian.
Madeline stood up at her own leisurely pace and calmly stepped aside.
Christian cast a brief glance at Madeline before locking his stern, unforgiving gaze on Denise. "Look at how you're behaving. Screaming and causing a scene like a pack of wild animals. None of you seem to have the slightest sense of decorum. One more outburst and I'll throw you all out onto the street."
"But Grandpa, I'm the victim here..."
"Denise, shut your mouth."
Denise wanted to scream back, but Lincoln quickly silenced her. She clamped her jaw shut, grinding her teeth so hard they felt ready to crack.
There was no way she was swallowing this humiliation. Fixing Madeline with a gaze of pure, venomous resentment, she hissed in humiliated fury, "Madeline, just you wait. I will never, ever let you get away with this."
Christian was already fully aware of the disaster at the corporate office. If Lincoln could be so easily provoked and manipulated by a woman's taunts, what use was he to the family? He had no right to stand here playing the victim.
"When is Julian returning?" Christian asked, breaking the tension.
"He should be back soon," Lucy replied.
"When he gets in, tell him to come see me." Having issued his order, Christian turned his attention to the two little boys. For the first time all evening, the severe lines of his face softened into genuine affection. "Noah, Oliver, it's been so long since I've seen you. Come here and let Great-grandpa get a good look at you."
Instead of running to him, Noah and Oliver stood their ground. They looked up at Christian, fiercely defending Madeline's honor. "Great-grandpa, Mommy didn't do anything wrong. They bullied her first."
Hearing Noah's defense, Christian looked over at Madeline and nodded in approval. "Great-grandpa heard everything. I don't blame your mommy one bit. Those two completely crossed the line, and your mommy taught them a well-deserved lesson."
It was the first time Christian had ever openly taken Madeline's side in a conflict, leaving her rather surprised by the sudden show of support.
Noticing her shock, Christian let out a low chuckle. "Why the surprised look? I'm not so senile that I've lost the ability to tell right from wrong."
Witnessing this entire exchange, Jane felt incredibly awkward standing off to the side. Desperate to assert her presence in the room, she quickly stepped forward with a sycophantic smile.
"Madeline, honestly, we didn't need you to apologize to us at all. What happened yesterday was already water under the bridge. It's just that Denise and Alianna are so close, and Denise felt Alianna was wronged. I'd like to apologize on their behalf. Please, don't take any of this to heart."
