“There’s a foreign guy in your little patch of woods. No idea if he’s still breathing Go check it out. He tried to put his hands on Winona. Just call the cops and have them lock him up,” Elijah said.

Sawyer went quiet for a second, then frowned. “Hey. Where are you going?”

Elijah didn’t answer. He just kept walking and left.

Austin’s expression turned serious. “Winona, we’re going to the hospital.”

She shook her head, drained. “No, Austin. I just want to go home and shower.”

He looked at the bruises on her expression, and his chest tightened. He hated himself for not going into those woods and finishing that b*stard off. “Did Elijah mess with you too?”

Winona knew how he was. If she said yes, he’d go after Elijah for sure. She didn’t want anything to do with him anymore, so she shook her head. “No. He helped me beat that creep up.”

Austin caught the flicker in her expression. “You said two creeps. Who’s the other one?”

She covered her ears, like she just wanted everything to stop. “Austin, please don’t ask. I’m really tired.”

He let out a quiet sigh, Elijah’s name running through his head.

The way the night had gone left him frustrated with himself for not looking out for her better. “I’m sorry, Winona.”

She shook her head again. “Austin, I’m okay. I was just scared.”

The family doctor had already come by to treat her injuries. They were all superficial. It was looked bad, but nothing serious.

“Austin, don’t tell Dad, Mom, or Grandpa about tonight. I don’t want them to worry,” she said.

Austin wanted to argue, but she was set on it, and he didn’t push, “Alright. Get some rest.”

He still had one of those creeps to deal with.

The last time she had seen him like that was during her second project.

That year, Winona returned home and signed with a small, barely known agency.
