Everything was electronically archived these days, and their sales data was routinely backed up. So within an hour, the files had
lready landed in Serena’s inbox.
After thanking her with a smile, Serena and Shawn left Credence Electronics.
Impressive.” Shawn shot her a thumbs–up. “Getting the documents this fast is no small feat.”
Serena offered a faint smile. “Not bad, I guess. I also overheard something.”
What is it?” Shawn asked.
The head of finance and the head of sales used to be married. They divorced two years ago, and the two departments haven’t jotten along since.”
shawn nodded in sudden understanding. “No wonder he refused to help us get those contracts from the sales team.”
is they stepped out of the office building, Serena glanced down at her ringing phone. It was Donald.
You’re not answering?” Shawn asked after watching her decline the call.
Just spam. Nothing worth picking up.”
Come on, let’s head back. We’ll return the day after tomorrow.”
Once she got into the car, she finally saw Donald’s text. ‘Rena, we’re family. Don’t be so stubborn. Withdraw the police report.
Serena gave the message a cold look before deleting it.
Funny how none of you thought about being family when you were drugging me.
But even after deleting the message, she still saw Donald’s people waiting for her at the firm’s entrance.
Shawn eyed the refined, gentle–looking man curiously. “Serena, is that your dad?”
She answered with a quiet hum. “Shawn, go on up first. Let the boss know I’ll be a little late.”
Then she walked steadily toward Donald’s car.
‘Rena, did you see the message I sent you?”
Serena tugged lightly at the corner of her lips. “I did. And then I deleted it.”
“You” Donald was instantly furious. “You’ve gotten more and more disrespectful tately. You just ignore your father’s messages now?”
Serena let out a short, cold laugh. “So what if I did? Your wife drugged me and sent her nephew to assault me. And you my father -want me to keep things in the family and let it go. Even the world’s most patient person wouldn’t swallow that. Why should (7”
Donald’s brows pulled tight, genuinely confused His daughter’s account and his wife’s story didn’t match at all. “You were

“Misunderstanding? She drugged me last time too–knocked me out and had me stuffed into a room. But now she’s suddenly not that kind of person? Or is it, Dad, that you knew, but you’re taking her side on purpose?”
“Nonsense!” Donald snapped under his breath. “She only told me she wanted you two to meet. How would I know anything else? And I think this is all just a misunderstanding. At most, her nephew can apologize to you. We’re farnily–why make it ugly?”
A surge of anger shot through Serena, but her voice only grew colder. “Dad, you’d rather trust an outsider than believe your own daughter, is that it?”
Donald refuted instantly, “How is Yvonne an outsider? We’ve been married for over twenty years!”
Serena let out a derisive breath. “I’m not withdrawing the case. The evidence is solid. Instead of trying to talk me down, you shoul focus on getting him a competent lawyer. Otherwise, once he cracks and drags your wife down with him, your company’s stock is going to take a few more hits.”
She walked away without hesitation, leaving Donald shouting uselessly behind her.
After her grandmother passed, Serena no longer had a real family. And Donald only kept teaching her, over and over again, what selfish perfection looked like–and just how hollow a father’s love could be.
