He instinctively took a couple of steps forward, but the memory of Amara’s sharp, blade-like glare made him stop in his tracks.

Dorian was watching Amara too, and he was genuinely furious. How could she say something like that to Finnian? Did she have any idea just how much Finnian cared about her?

Had she forgotten all the times Finnian had risked his life to save her?

He glanced at Finnian, seeing his usually strong, unyielding friend looking as if he could barely stand. Dorian frowned deeply, then strode after Amara. “Amara, wait!”

He wanted to pull Amara aside and talk to her about Finnian, but as soon as he grabbed her arm, Amara’s face suddenly changed. She raised her hand and slapped him hard across the face.

“Get lost! You jerk! Do you realize how annoying you are? I guess it’s true what they say—birds of a feather flock together. No wonder you two are such good friends!”

Finnian looked at her gentle profile. Seeing how much she seemed to dislike him—she wouldn’t even look at him—made him ache inside.

“Amara, you’ve misunderstood me. I never meant to play games with you. What you said to me today… it really hurt,” he said softly.

Was it her imagination, or did his voice sound a little aggrieved?
