Larry hadn't kept the safe all these years for its financial value. While the gold bullion and vintage jewelry inside represented a massive fortune to ordinary people, to the chairman of a major corporation, it was loose change.
He had held onto it simply because he missed his late wife.
As the years slipped by, Larry found himself thinking of Marissa more and more.
His recent softening toward Amara was largely tied to those memories of her mother, though he would never admit it out loud.
He was a man entrenched in traditional, prideful masculinity. He was practically hardwired to suppress his emotions, viewing vulnerability as a flaw.
There was zero chance he would ever sit down and tell Amara how deeply he missed Marissa. Just offering her an apology today had required him to push past every emotional boundary he had.
Amara looked down, gently running her fingers over the cold metal of the safe. A bitter sweetness bloomed in her chest.
Though she had never known her mother, she had always longed for her. Growing up, she would constantly pester the household staff for stories about her and spend hours staring at her photographs.
She often imagined what her mother must have gone through while pregnant with her, what her voice sounded like, how she smiled. That imagined bond was a core piece of her heart.
She looked back up at Larry, a question lingering in her mind. "Dad, how did you find out Fiona was stealing from it?"
Since the topic of Fiona's thievery was now out in the open, and considering all the hell Fiona had put her through, Amara dropped the polite 'Mrs. Sullivan' title entirely.
Larry didn't bat an eye at the disrespect. He simply let out a cold scoff. "There isn't a single thing she does that I don't know about."
If even Amara knew, did that mean the scandal was already an open secret in their social circles?
Larry was a man who prized his reputation above all else. The mere thought of being publicly humiliated made his expression darken ominously.
Amara knew her father well enough to read the panic behind his anger. She quickly reassured him, "I saw it with my own eyes. Back when I was staying at the Everly Estate, I went out for a walk one night and happened to catch them at the entrance..."
She kept her eyes locked on his face as she spoke.
Larry looked grim, but not surprised. That confirmed it—he didn't just know about the affair; he knew exactly who it was with.
"I haven't breathed a word of this to anyone," Amara promised softly. "It hasn't leaked. You don't need to worry about the public finding out, Dad."
