The evidence had been sent anonymously, so apart from having someone monitor the whistleblower channels, Sebastian couldn't exactly ask Elara what her plans were.
Fortunately, Melody's birthday party was right around the corner, giving him the perfect excuse to test the waters in person.
The party kicked off in the afternoon. The first half was strictly for the kids, while the relatives weren't expected to arrive until the evening.
Sebastian skipped his lunch break, burning through his afternoon workload to clear his schedule. Once the urgent files were dealt with, he pushed the rest to the next day and immediately texted Elara.
Sebastian: [Where is Melody's party being held?]
He knew her exact home address, but showing up unannounced would be rude and wildly suspicious.
Besides, if he didn't initiate the conversation like this, how else was he supposed to get her talking?
Elara was on her way to pick up Melody when she saw the text. Assuming Sebastian wasn't sure if the party was at The Beckett Manor or their private residence, she quickly replied:
[It's being held at our place.]
She pinned her location and sent it over, adding a casual question: [Are you heading over now?]
Sebastian replied instantly: [Yeah.]
Elara was surprised: [This early? Are you not working today?]
Sebastian: [Finished my work. Clocked out early.]
Elara: "..."
Perks of being the boss, she supposed.
Elara: [My mom is at the house. You can head over first if you want.]
Sebastian: [You're not home?]
[No, I'm on my way to the preschool to pick up Melody and her classmates.]
[You aren't at the school yet?]
Why was he asking for so many specifics?
Elara felt a flicker of confusion but figured Sebastian was just eager to see Melody. She answered honestly: [Still on the road. Almost there.]
Sebastian: [Then I'll meet you at the preschool and we can pick her up together.]
But since he had already made up his mind, she couldn't exactly turn him away: [Alright, come on over. I'll wait for you at the school gates.]
[Do you still remember the address?]
[I remember.]
The second he sent the text, Sebastian cleared his desk, shut down his laptop, grabbed his overcoat, and strode out of the office.
His corporate building wasn't far from the preschool, so he arrived mere moments after Elara.
Quite a few parents were already gathered outside. Elara was mid-conversation with them when she suddenly realized there was a new presence standing right beside her, causing her to jump slightly.
"That was fast?"
Sebastian was still sporting his sharp, slicked-back corporate hairstyle, putting his strong brow on full display. His devastatingly handsome features typically carried a harsh severity, but right now, his sharp eyes were slightly crinkled at the corners. He offered a warm, breezy smile that carried just a hint of smug satisfaction. "Yeah."
Back when Melody first started school, Julian had actually played the part of the devoted father, diligently picking her up and dropping her off alongside Elara. As a result, most of the parents in the class recognized him.
So, when this startlingly gorgeous, unfamiliar younger man suddenly materialized at Elara's side, the parents were instantly burning with curiosity.
"Melody's mom, who is this?" one of the parents couldn't resist asking.
