Julian stood completely paralyzed.
He knew he had chipped away at Melody's trust, and he knew he had hurt her.
But because Melody had always struggled to rely on anyone, he had been confident he could just win her over again.
It wasn't until she explicitly told him she hated him, that she didn't like him, and wouldn't forgive him, that he finally realized he had lost something vital.
Jocelyn's warning forced him to face the reality: he had destroyed her trust and reliance on him.
Because it was so hard for her to depend on anyone, rebuilding that bond would be infinitely harder now that it was shattered.
A brief wave of panic washed over Julian, but his focus quickly shifted to custody.
Elara hadn't worked in years and had no stable income. If she wanted to provide a good life for Melody, she would have to work herself to the bone, which inevitably meant neglecting her daughter.
He refused to let Melody suffer the struggles of a single-parent household like he had.
Furthermore, if Elara took custody, he'd still be obligated to pay child support and maintain regular contact with them.
Vivian would definitely be upset if he was constantly seeing Elara and Melody.
But if he took full custody, he could completely control when and where Elara saw their daughter, giving him the upper hand.
He didn't want Vivian to suffer any unnecessary grievances once they were together.
But after tonight's disaster, Melody clearly despised him. Would she even want to live with him?
And knowing Elara, she would fight tooth and nail for custody.
If he forcefully took Melody away, would he ever be able to have a normal relationship with her again?
Julian felt entirely lost.
Seeing that her words had hit their mark, Jocelyn knocked on the bedroom door. "Melody, can Grandma come in?"
Melody immediately relaxed and stopped squirming.
After holding out for another minute, she mumbled miserably, "But my eyes are puffy."
Every time she cried, her eyes puffed up like goldfish, and it looked terrible. She had school tomorrow and wasn't sure if the swelling would go down in time.
"I'll get a cold compress for you," Elara suggested.
Melody pulled back slightly, looking at Elara for confirmation. "Will it make the puffiness go away?"
"At least you won't look like a goldfish." Elara smiled, gently pinching her nose. "When have I ever lied to you?"
Melody thought about it and shook her head. "No. You never lie to me."
Thinking about her wild tantrum earlier, she felt a little embarrassed. She leaned in close and planted a kiss on Elara's cheek.
