"I... I hate him!"
"I know," Elara whispered, pressing a kiss to her cheek.
"I don't... want to like him... anymore!"
"Okay."
"He always... lies to me!"
"He lies, and he always lies to you too!"
"..."
"I'm never gonna forgive him!"
"I hate him!"
"That's perfectly fine. I support you."
Melody cried softly, no longer needing to verify if her mother was telling the truth.
Because she knew Elara genuinely had her back.
As long as she had her mother's trust and support, she was okay.
"Oh, Julian, look at you..."
A voice drifted in from the hallway.
It was Jocelyn.
When Julian had returned and triggered Melody's outburst, Jocelyn had been in the shower and hadn't heard clearly, thinking she was imagining things.
After she finished washing up, she still felt uneasy. Throwing on a coat, she came upstairs to check, only hearing Melody's sobs once she reached the second floor.
Julian was leaning against the wall by the door, awkwardly clutching two beautifully wrapped gift boxes.
He looked miserable, regretful, angry, and inexplicably conflicted.
Jocelyn took it all in but pretended to notice nothing out of the ordinary as she walked over.
"You promised you'd be home early, but then you were completely unreachable. Elara had to entertain all those guests while worrying about you. That's incredibly exhausting."
"Melody had been looking forward to this party for so long, and the person she loves and relies on most wasn't there. Her classmates and teachers were all watching. How do you think that made her feel?"
Jocelyn's reasoning was flawless, leaving Julian entirely speechless. With Melody still sobbing inside and Elara clearly furious, he had no desire to argue.
Jocelyn sighed, shifting her tone slightly. "I'm not trying to scold you or tell you how to live your life. I just hope you can try to understand how Elara and Melody feel right now."
"...I know," Julian replied dryly.
"You know Melody's condition better than I do. It took you both years to earn her genuine trust, for her to finally rely on you and share her feelings with you."
Pausing for a moment, Jocelyn looked him dead in the eye. The gentle warmth faded from her voice, replaced by a subtle, underlying warning masked as a reminder.
"Trust is incredibly difficult to build, but it only takes one small mistake to shatter it completely."
"Julian, you just destroyed your daughter's image of you."
You don't deserve to be a good father to her anymore.
