Elara seemed terrified by her own deduction, standing entirely frozen as tears streamed relentlessly down her face.

"Is that it?"

"Was I right? Did you really cheat on me?"

"No."

Julian's eyelid twitched. He hurriedly denied it, stepping forward to pull the dazed Elara into his arms.

"I told you to stop overthinking things. Why can't you just control yourself?"

"I have you and Melody. Who else would I possibly be with?"

"Then why do you refuse to agree to my proposal?"

Elara pressed her hands against his chest, forcing a slight distance between them. She rested her chin on his shoulder, her tear-filled, vacant eyes staring blankly at the ceiling.

"And why won't you explain yourself properly? All you ever do is tell me to stop being unreasonable."

"Is it because I hit the nail on the head? Because you can't explain it away, so you get defensive and just spout these empty words?"

"Look at you..."

Even backed into this corner, Julian still refused to swear a solemn oath to clear his name regarding Vivian Winthrop and give her peace of mind.

"You keep saying the same things over and over. What else am I supposed to say?"

"You're already suspicious, so no matter what I tell you, you're going to think I'm lying, right?"

Elara remained silent, as if his words had struck a chord and left her speechless.

Julian wrapped one arm around her waist, his other hand habitually rubbing her back. Yet, a surge of irritable disgust welled up inside him.

He preferred the old Elara—the calm, rational woman who knew her boundaries. She never used to put him in difficult positions, and she certainly never acted like a hysterical shrew, crying and screaming until communication became utterly impossible.

She was a lawyer. In terms of sheer communication skills, hardly any of her colleagues could out-talk her, and their minds simply didn't work as fast as hers.

How had such an eloquent woman turned into a broken record of a shrew?

Had she really been out of the workforce for so long that her abilities had degraded to the point where she couldn't even hold a normal conversation?
