Julian looked at her deeply for a moment before looking down to flip the 'Marital Property Agreement' back to the first page, reading it over once more.
Everything was proceeding according to his plan. He knew full well that when their marriage eventually ended, the shares he was handing over as a stopgap measure would return right back to him.
Yet, reading the line, 'All profits generated by these shares shall belong entirely to the female party, Elara Sterling, as personal property, and shall not be considered joint marital assets,' Julian couldn't help but feel an indescribably complicated emotion.
It felt as though he was on the verge of losing something, leaving a sudden, inexplicable emptiness in his chest.
Julian stared blankly at the paragraph for a moment before looking back up at Elara.
Elara was looking right back at him, clearly wondering why he was taking so long to sign.
She didn't grow anxious or angry that he was stalling, nor did she suspect him of dragging his feet to back out.
Their eyes met, and Elara gave him an open, easy smile. "What's wrong? Is there something else you need to add?"
Julian looked away. "No."
He continued reading. As he finished and breathed a sigh of relief, he couldn't help but reflect that even though Elara had become paranoid and whiny, she still knew her place and hadn't used the opportunity to make outrageous demands.
Julian picked up the pen, signed his name on the line for the male party, and then pressed his thumb onto the ink pad to leave a fingerprint, just as she requested.
Once both copies were signed and stamped, he quickly grabbed a wet wipe to clean his hands. "Is that good enough?"
Elara took them, signed her own name, stamped her fingerprint, and handed one copy back to him. "Yes, it is."
Julian took it, only to hear her ask, "Should we do the Corporate Registry Filing at the Department of Business Oversight tomorrow morning, or in the afternoon?"
