"Great, then it's a deal. No backing out!" Elara finally smiled.
Julian was thoroughly agitated by her erratic mood swings. "When did I ever say I was backing out?"
"You didn't explicitly say it, but your behavior definitely implied it!"
Elara argued with righteous indignation, "Otherwise, why would I feel so insecure? It's all your own fault."
"..."
She was becoming more and more unreasonable.
Julian tiredly pinched the bridge of his nose, grabbed the contract from the table, and stood up.
He stood up so abruptly that Elara was slightly startled. Watching him walk toward the door, she asked in surprise, "Are you sleeping in the study again tonight?"
"I have work."
Julian didn't even glance at her. He gave a curt reply, pulled the door open, and left the room.
The door slammed shut with a heavy thud, as if flipping a switch. The expression on Elara's face slowly vanished.
There was no sadness, no pain, and no disappointment left. She was so calm and composed that it bordered on total apathy.
Expressionless, Elara put the contract away, locked it in the safe, and grabbed a change of clothes to take a shower.
Stepping into the study felt like entering another dimension. All the buzzing noise that had been hovering around Julian's ears completely vanished.
Julian tossed the contract onto the desk and sat down on the sofa. Deciding that wasn't enough, he simply lay down flat and closed his eyes.
He could finally get a moment of peace.
He hadn't even been home for three hours, yet he felt more exhausted than he did after a full day's work.
Was coming home always like this?
Why hadn't he ever noticed it before?
