Elara closed the door, walked over, and sat on the edge of the bed. She leaned down and kissed her forehead. "Good morning, sweetheart."
Melody was fully awake now. Her eyes widened, and she replied sweetly, "Good morning, Mommy."
Elara brushed a strand of hair from her face. "Ready to get up?"
Melody nodded and stretched out both arms. "Hug me, Mommy."
"Okay."
Elara scooped her up into her arms.
Melody naturally rested her head on Elara's shoulder, holding onto her to shake off the last bits of sleep.
Elara gently patted her back, waiting until she was mostly alert before asking, "Shall we go wash your face and brush your teeth?"
Melody rubbed against Elara's neck and nodded. "Okay."
Then she obediently pulled back from her mother and stood up.
Elara helped her into a light jacket, accompanied her to the bathroom to wash up, and then they picked out her clothes together.
When Julian knocked and entered, the mother and daughter had just finished changing and were getting ready to brush and tie Melody's hair.
As their eyes met, Julian said gently, "Good morning."
Melody still didn't answer him, but she didn't completely ignore him either. Her bright eyes stared at him curiously, as if trying to guess his next move.
When they were home, the caretakers usually didn't come upstairs. Since he was already inside, Julian didn't bother closing the door and walked straight over.
Melody watched him the entire way. Only when Julian sat down on the sofa next to her did she withdraw her gaze and look down to play on her phone.
Having experienced his daughter's rejection a few times now, Julian wisely refrained from doing anything that might further upset Melody. He sat quietly on the sidelines, only stepping in to hand Elara things when she needed them.
"All done."
Once her hair was tied, Elara handed Melody a mirror as usual, asking for her opinion. "Take a look. How is it?"
Melody took the mirror, checked her left profile, then her right, looking very pleased. "It's perfect! Thank you, Mommy!"
