Before hanging up, Vivian softly added, "Do you need my help?"
She had only recently been promoted to a full-time executive assistant; her personal influence was virtually nonexistent. Offering to help was a blatant, strategic reminder of the powerful Winthrop family standing behind her.
Julian was moved and profoundly grateful, but he turned her down anyway. "No need. I've got this handled."
Vivian fell silent.
Assuming he had hurt her feelings, Julian quickly tried to soothe her. "It's a minor headache. There's absolutely no reason to drag your father into this."
Vivian's mood instantly brightened, and she let out a light laugh. "Well, if you ever do need anything, you have to promise you'll call me."
"I promise."
They exchanged a few more soft words before Vivian tactfully ended the call, giving him space to finish his meal in peace.
Shortly after lunch, Julian's phone rang again. It was Sebastian.
Given their family ties and the gravity of the situation, Sebastian didn't bother with pleasantries. "I had my people look into it. My company didn't do this."
The breath caught in Julian's throat. His expression darkened instantly, his tone bleeding its previous warmth. "Are you absolutely certain?"
"I wouldn't have called you back if I wasn't," Sebastian fired back with his trademark careless arrogance. He already sounded incredibly bored. "You wanted an explanation, didn't you? Well, there it is."
"..."
"Have you pissed someone off recently?" Sebastian asked casually.
Julian scoffed. "No."
"Then why is someone out for your blood?" Sebastian's skepticism was palpable. "Why don't you think a little harder? Or maybe, just maybe, this actually was a complete accident?"
A random accident? A highly coordinated leak pushed by massive Twitter influencers, perfectly packaged to incite blue-collar outrage until it hit the top trending spot?
