"Alright," Jocelyn murmured, running through the ingredients in the fridge while suggesting, "You go take a shower first. It'll be ready when you come down."

"Okay, thanks, Jocelyn."

Julian took off his jacket, draping it over his arm as he headed for the stairs. Passing Elara and Melody, he paused, crouching down in front of the little girl and forcing a smile. "Good evening, Melody."

Melody was still a little wary of him. She instinctively shrank back behind Elara, looking curiously at his outstretched hand but doing nothing.

Daddy hadn't come home before her bedtime in a long time. She was happy, yet upset.

She was happy to see her dad, but upset about everything he had done before and how long he had stayed away at night.

Melody felt torn. She wanted to talk and play with her dad like she used to, but she wasn't sure if he genuinely wanted to spend time with her, or if he would suddenly get angry halfway through.

Plus, Daddy only had five points right now. He hadn't earned her forgiveness yet, so she couldn't afford to be soft-hearted!

Julian had anticipated this reaction and wasn't annoyed. He calmly pulled his hand back. He instinctively wanted to pat his daughter's head, but fearing it might upset her, his hand hovered in the air before dropping back down.

"Daddy is going to take a shower first, and then I'll come hang out with you, okay?" he asked, his voice softening.

Melody remained silent. Her big, dark eyes stared at him unblinkingly.

Julian smiled bitterly to himself. He had really offended the child this time. It had been days, and she was still mad.

"Well, see you later..."

Julian smiled and waved, about to walk past the mother and daughter to head upstairs, when Melody suddenly spoke up. "You're not going back out?"

Her sweet, childish voice was laced with deep distrust.

Julian froze. Meeting his daughter's clear, serious gaze, a wave of guilt washed over him, and he looked away.
