With that, he turned and walked downstairs toward the sitting room.
Jocelyn quickly asked, "Well, are you still having pasta?"
She had assumed he was going to leave right after taking the call.
"...Yes," Julian added, "please fry an egg for me, too."
Jocelyn was a little surprised. She paused for a second before replying, "Oh, alright."
Julian had already walked past her and stepped into the sitting room.
The moment the sitting room door shut, all sound from inside was completely muffled.
The three generations of women exchanged glances.
Melody stared blankly in the direction Julian had gone for a while. Then she tilted her head up and whispered to Elara, "Mommy, is Daddy not leaving?"
Elara didn't know what was going through Julian's mind either, but she could glean a little from his decision. Still, she didn't make any absolute promises. "Looks like it."
Pulling her gaze back, Elara patted her daughter's head and asked, "Shall we go take a shower first?"
Melody nodded vigorously, her voice crisp and sounding very happy. "Okay!"
Elara lowered her eyes, smoothing her daughter's hair. Without saying another word, she took Melody's hand and led her upstairs.
Julian's premonition had been correct.
Vivian had indeed slipped while taking a shower.
She had refused the nanny's help to bathe by herself, but just as she finished and put on her robe to step out, her foot slipped, and she took a hard fall.
Thankfully, Cora had been right outside the bathroom. Hearing the crash, she rushed in immediately.
After checking to make sure Vivian hadn't sustained any other injuries, Cora reapplied the medication to her knees.
Afraid that Cora would contact Julian, Vivian repeatedly pleaded with her not to tell him before she left the room.
