Everything suffered in comparison.
Originally, Elara not asking too many questions was exactly what Julian wanted.
But after hearing the nanny's parallel response, he couldn't stop his mind from making the comparison.
No matter what, they were a married couple. How could she have given him the exact same generic reply every single time for so long?
Couldn't she care about him just a little bit more?
After giving Cora his final instructions, Julian hung up the phone.
When he stepped out, he could smell the savory aroma of meat drifting from the kitchen from down the hall.
There had been some minced meat in the fridge, so Jocelyn had made a quick meat sauce, fried an egg, and boiled the water. She was just waiting for him to finish his call to drop the pasta in.
Jocelyn had been scrolling through videos in the dining room while waiting. Seeing him come out, she put her phone down and stood up. "Done with your call? I'll go boil the pasta for you."
Julian said sure and walked into the dining room.
The water was already boiling, so the pasta went right in. She blanched a handful of greens, and it was ready in no time.
Jocelyn brought the plate out, set it in front of Julian, and untied her apron. "Just leave the plate in the sink when you're done. I'll wash it when I get up tomorrow."
They really didn't have much to talk about anyway. If she sat there, it would just be awkward for both of them, so Jocelyn considerately gave Julian some space.
"Alright."
After Julian finished eating and went upstairs, Melody had already taken her shower. She was tucked into bed, reading a picture book with Elara.
Julian pushed the door open without making a sound. He quietly closed it behind him, tiptoed over to the edge of the bed, sat down, and listened quietly as the mother and daughter read together.
Melody still hadn't said she forgave him, but when she noticed he was there, she didn't completely ignore him either. She stole several secret glances his way.
