Julian's heart lurched, as if something had sharply yanked at it, or as if a hole had ruptured and something vital was slowly bleeding out.
"Elara..."
He called her name, his voice tight and dry. He didn't know what to say. A tangled mess of words clumped in his throat, making the chaos in his chest even worse.
A creeping premonition warned him that if he didn't say something right now, he was going to lose something incredibly important.
Julian tried desperately to untangle the knot in his mind, but Elara didn't give him the chance.
"I think you're right. There really are a lot of things I don't understand."
Elara crossed her arms, standing up straight with a nonchalant smile. "So, I've decided that once things are a bit more stable with Melody, I'm going to find a job and re-enter society."
Julian was stunned. "You're going back to work?"
"Yeah," Elara said with a self-deprecating laugh. "You haven't given me my salary in months. If I don't start working, the day you decide to never come home again and abandon us, Melody and I will starve on the streets."
"Wh-what?"
Julian didn't process it immediately. When he finally remembered that he hadn't paid Elara her agreed-upon allowance for a while, the hollow ache in his chest grew even more intense.
"I..."
But Elara refused to listen. She turned and walked into the bathroom. "It's too late. I'm taking a shower."
Bam— The bathroom door shut, leaving a completely bewildered Julian standing alone in the middle of the bedroom.
Julian stared blankly at the closed door, his mind racing with a million thoughts—from Elara's allowance, to his neglected daughter, and finally, to Vivian.
Three women. One he used to love, one he loved now, and his daughter.
He was supposed to have a happy family. Melody had a bit of a unique personality, but she was a lovely, affectionate little girl. Now, this home didn't feel like a home anymore. He didn't love Elara anymore, and his daughter refused to let him near her, refusing to forgive him, telling him she hated him and didn't want a daddy.
