The car turned a corner, and the brightly colored sign for Shoreline Preschool came into view.
They had run into some traffic and arrived late. The entrance was swarmed with parents waiting to pick up their children, and every nearby parking spot was completely taken.
Elara suggested Julian find a place to turn around while she got out to grab Melody, planning to just hop back in the car and leave the second they regrouped.
Julian accepted the idea, parking nearby while Elara got out.
Elara usually arrived early, almost always taking Melody home in the very first wave of pickups.
Melody was waiting in line at the gate, watching her classmates—who normally left long after her—leave one by one. She inevitably felt a bit down, standing in the middle of the crowd with her head bowed.
"Melody!"
Hearing her mother's voice, Melody's head snapped up. Spotting Elara, her eyes immediately lit up. She threw her little arms wide open and ran toward her.
"Mommy!"
Elara bent down, catching her daughter as she practically flew into her arms, lifting her up and showering her hair and cheeks with kisses.
"I'm so sorry, there was traffic. Mommy is late."
Melody rested her chin on Elara's shoulder and gently shook her head.
Knowing she had felt a bit anxious waiting for so long, Melody leaned into Elara's ear and whispered, "I was a teeny tiny bit scared just now, but only a teeny tiny bit. I didn't even cry!"
She solemnly promised, "Because I knew you'd come get me really fast!"
"You're amazing!"
Elara gently ruffled her hair. "Thank you for believing in Mommy, sweetie."
Melody's eyes curved into happy little crescents, and she rubbed her soft cheek affectionately against Elara's. "You're welcome!"
Elara rubbed her cheek against hers in return before asking, "Should I carry you out, or do you want to walk?"
Melody decisively answered, "I'll walk by myself!"
