Melody was filled with questions and still hesitating over whether she should ask her mom, when Elara said, "Daddy got off work early today."
"Huh?"
Melody blinked, finding it incredibly hard to believe.
Elara pointed to the car parked across the street. "Daddy came with me to pick you up today. Do you see? His car is parked right over there."
Melody had good eyesight. Following her mother's finger, she spotted it instantly. Her dark, round eyes brightened significantly.
But she didn't rush over excitedly like she used to when Julian returned from a long business trip. Instead, she actually looked a bit anxious and uneasy.
Elara sensed it. "Are you not happy Daddy came to pick you up?"
Melody shook her head, answering honestly, "I just can't believe it."
Elara completely understood her daughter's feelings. She stroked her hair, offering no extra defenses for Julian, simply stating the reason he was here.
"Daddy came to pick us up so we could all go to Grandpa and Meredith's house."
Elara stopped walking, fixing her gaze on her daughter. "Do you want to go to Grandpa's house?"
Melody stopped too, tilting her little head up at Elara. Under the gentle, rhythmic petting of her mother's hand, her internal anxiety faded away.
She thought about it calmly and seriously, then gave a truthful shake of her head. "I don't want to go."
Elara didn't ask why. She immediately responded, "Then let's go tell Daddy that we aren't going tonight."
Melody visibly brightened. "Can we really?"
"Of course we can."
Elara curled a finger and gently tapped her daughter's nose. "My baby's happiness is the most important thing. If you don't want to go, we won't go."
Melody tilted her face up and smiled at her. "Thank you, Mommy."
