Melody had never seen Meredith smile at her so warmly, and it terrified her so much she practically shrank behind Elara.
Elara had never witnessed such a scene either. Shielding Melody, she discreetly sized her up.
Meredith smiled so hard that the crow's feet at the corners of her eyes were heavily pronounced.
But looking into her eyes, Elara saw only impatience and forced endurance. There wasn't a trace of genuine warmth.
She had no genuine desire to be warm toward them. She had simply run into a wall and desperately needed their help, forcing her to put on this sickeningly sweet act.
"Let's head inside."
Julian had parked the car and walked over a second later. Instinctively, he reached down to pick Melody up, but the moment his hand brushed her back, the child flinched violently and plastered herself against Elara.
Thankfully it was dark and Melody was short, so no one noticed.
Julian stiffened, awkwardly pulling his hand back and opting instead to loosely wrap an arm around Elara's shoulders.
"Let's go inside, it's cold out here."
Elara shot him a strange look, thinking, *I know it's cold, I'd go inside even if you didn't say anything.* But since they were putting on a show, she kept her mouth shut, guiding Melody inside and smoothly slipping out from under his arm.
The staff had already prepared slippers for them. Elara watched Melody change her shoes first before slipping into her own.
Melody was well-behaved. While Elara swapped shoes, she immediately started unbuttoning her own coat.
Seeing her undo all the buttons and prepare to take it off, Meredith extended her hand and said softly, "Give the coat to me."
Melody shuddered, not even looking at her as she instinctively dodged the outstretched hand.
Elara had just finished changing her shoes. Seeing Meredith close in, she pretended not to notice her daughter's frantic evasion and asked, "Do you need my help?"
Since Meredith was right there, Melody couldn't exactly tattle out loud, so she simply went along with Elara's words and gave a firm nod. "Mhm."
