Julian was intensely curious about whoever had scored this dinner date.
But asking directly would make it seem like he actually cared about Elara.
"Did you forget something?"
Elara prompted when he remained silent. "Did you drop something?"
Her demeanor was flawlessly natural, completely devoid of the guilt of someone caught red-handed.
Julian didn't answer right away. He studied her intently, his gaze drifting down to her phone before he finally broke. "Who were you texting?"
"Huh?" Elara feigned absolute shock, looking completely bewildered.
Hunt her innocent, confused stare left Julian feeling defensive. He cleared his throat and muttered awkwardly, "I stood here for a while and you didn't even notice me. Who were you chatting with that had you so absorbed?"
"Oh, this?"
Elara acted as if she had just realized, waving her locked phone with a brilliant smile. "Just a friend."
Julian didn't buy the 'just a friend' routine for a second.
Elara noticed his skepticism and, instead of getting defensive, her smile widened. "Do you care?"
She rolled the window all the way down, rested her arms on the frame, and tilted her head up. Looking at him with a teasing, almost affectionate gaze, she asked, "Can I take this to mean you're jealous?"
Julian flinched, his eyes widening in disbelief before a flicker of disgust crossed his features. It was a look that practically screamed: Are you out of your mind?
Elara wasn't offended. She just kept beaming at him, delivering words that left a bitter taste in his mouth. "That's what your face is telling me."
Julian had no idea what she was talking about. His face?
What expression was he even making? And since when did it broadcast his thoughts to her?
"You don't realize how terrifying you looked when you were pounding on the window."
Elara suddenly dropped her smile, furrowing her brows and glaring fiercely, doing a spot-on imitation of his earlier scowl. "Just like this. Your eyes were ice-cold, and you looked so angry it was like you wanted to eat me alive."
