"Grandpa."
Maddox offered a soft hum in response and asked, "Is your morning meeting over? Am I interrupting anything?"
"No morning meeting today," Sebastian chuckled lightly. "And surprisingly, no urgent fires to put out either. Grandpa, did you time this on purpose?"
His laughter was contagious, coaxing a chuckle out of Maddox as well. The two made small talk for a bit before Maddox finally steered the conversation toward Meredith.
The whistleblower had bypassed the lower ranks and filed the report straight to the bureau chief's desk, prompting an immediate mandate for a full investigation. Since the legal representative had already passed away and the corporate fraud at Vanguard Strategic was indisputable, the case was airtight. There was no way to sweep it under the rug, and it was too late to backpedal.
However, Meredith was still Maddox's wife and the current matriarch of the Beckett family. If the scandal went public, the collateral damage to the Beckett family and Beckett Corp's reputation would be catastrophic. He couldn't just sit back and do nothing.
"I managed to keep her out of the crosshairs for now."
Maddox didn't offer a lengthy justification, simply informing Sebastian of his decision and the aftermath. "I've come to an understanding with the authorities. There won't be any named press coverage. As for the rest, the law will take its course, and she'll pay whatever fines are mandated."
His hands were tied. They were entirely in the wrong, and securing a deal that spared Meredith from prosecution, prison time, and a media circus was the absolute maximum concession the government was willing to grant.
Sebastian wasn't the least bit surprised. The outcome perfectly mirrored his predictions. He had never harbored any real delusions that his grandfather would sit back and allow the Beckett matriarch to face criminal charges and a humiliating trial.
"I see."
Twirling a pen lazily between his fingers, Sebastian spoke with a nonchalant drawl. "I trust your judgment, Grandpa. Whatever you decide is fine with me."
His effortless compliance, however, plunged Maddox into a heavy silence.
Maddox knew full well that Sebastian wouldn't put up a fight regardless of what he did—and even if he did, it likely wouldn't change the outcome.
But the ugly truth remained: Meredith's sole purpose in registering that shell company was to funnel resources to her son, directly undermining Sebastian's shares and his rightful inheritance.
When it came down to it, Sebastian was just as much a victim in this crossfire as Elara.
And Sebastian was his only flesh and blood.
