After soothing Vivian, they got out of bed and washed up.

Following a quick breakfast, Julian got ready to head to the office.

Vivian's knee was much better, allowing her to comfortably navigate to the elevator on crutches.

She insisted on seeing Julian off at the elevator. Out of options, Julian planned to humor her, let her say goodbye at the doors, and then carry her back inside.

But he never got the chance.

Just as they reached the elevator, the doors abruptly slid open right in front of them.

Vivian's apartment was one of only two units on this floor, and the neighboring apartment had been vacant for years. Since they hadn't even pressed the button yet, why had the elevator come up?

Startled, they both stared at the open doors and froze.

The man inside was equally caught off guard, clearly not expecting a welcoming committee.

"Dad?"

Vivian was the first to gasp. "What are you doing here?"

Following her voice, Thomas Winthrop's gaze locked onto her face. A second later, he noticed the crutches supporting her weight, and his eyes dropped to her suspended leg. His expression instantly darkened.

"What happened to your leg?!"

Vivian instinctively scrambled for an excuse. "It's, it's nothing, Dad!"

Dressed in a sharp suit, Thomas stormed out of the elevator and marched right up to her, ignoring her weak defense completely. "When did this happen?"

Vivian didn't want him to worry. "It's really nothing! I'm just using the crutches to be safe, look..."

She leaned the crutches against the wall and prepared to hop a few steps to prove it, but Thomas didn't even look at her. He turned his chilling glare onto Julian.

"You tell me," he demanded coldly.

Julian didn't dare lie, but realized the hallway wasn't the place for an interrogation. "Let's talk inside."
