Completely unsurprised, Julian asked calmly, "What do you want?"
Elara already had her own plan mapped out, but she kept her mouth shut.
She had only submitted her divorce papers a few days ago. Nearing the end of the year, the Shoreline County Courthouse was swamped, and she had no idea how long the queue would take.
Until the Asset Freeze Petition and Discovery Subpoena were approved, she couldn't alert Julian and give him the chance to transfer more assets.
"I haven't decided yet."
Elara withdrew her hand and stared fixedly at Julian. "But Julian, don't forget, in this marriage, you are the party at fault. Whatever conditions I demand are fully justified!"
"Don't think you can brush me off with the kind of spare change you'd toss to a beggar."
"And I get full custody of Melody."
Julian nodded thoughtfully after hearing her out.
Just as he expected. A house, a car, millions of dollars in compensation, plus yielding custody of their daughter to him—these were conditions Elara would obviously never accept.
These terms were purely a negotiating tactic, not a genuine attempt to get her to sign on the first try. If she had actually signed so easily, that would have been the truly bizarre outcome.
"Think about it some more."
Julian didn't touch the divorce papers. He bypassed the desk and headed for the door. "Contact me when you've thought it through."
Elara didn't stop him, maintaining her position facing the desk with her back to the door, standing there in a seemingly dazed stupor.
But just as Julian opened the door to the study, she suddenly spoke up. "Why?"
Julian froze, his hand stalling on the doorknob. He didn't turn around, nor did he push the door open to leave.
The two stood back-to-back, neither looking at the other.
"Why?"
Elara asked again, "When did it start?"
Two abrupt questions without context, yet Julian knew exactly what she was asking.
Why the affair?
Why the change of heart?
And when exactly did he fall for someone else?
After a long stretch of silence, Julian asked aloofly, "What difference does it make if you know?"
Elara: "I have a right to know."
