Sarah had rarely gotten off work early without any social obligations today. She was currently taking a bath. Hearing Elara's words, she shot up from the tub with a massive splash.
"He didn't give you a hard time, did he?"
"No."
Elara moved swiftly, stuffing all the documents into her bags before grabbing her laptop. "But he admitted he was trying to drive me insane."
"Fuck."
Sarah unleashed a stream of curses, already throwing on her clothes. "Do you need me to come pick you up?"
"No, I'm fine for now, and he's already left. Let's talk about the rest when I get there."
"Okay, I'll be waiting."
Elara gathered all the critical documents and IDs, packed them into two bags, changed her clothes, and hurried downstairs.
Melody and Jocelyn were still playing in the playroom. Melody was being a good girl and hadn't come out.
Dropping her bags on the sofa, Elara headed to the playroom to find her mother and Melody.
With her child present, she didn't say too much. She only mentioned she had some business with Sarah and might be back very late, asking Melody to sleep with her grandma tonight.
She tried her best to hide it, but both of them were her flesh and blood. How could they miss the strain in her voice?
"Mommy."
Melody walked over and gently hugged Elara's legs. Tipping her head back, she looked up with worried eyes, seeming to want to say something but not knowing how to comfort her. Ultimately, she just silently opened her arms.
"Hug."
Elara crouched down and pulled her daughter into a tight embrace.
Jocelyn walked over as well, standing behind Melody. She looked at her daughter hesitantly. "Is it bad?"
"No."
Elara gently stroked her daughter's head and back while giving Jocelyn a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, I can handle it."
"Well..."
Jocelyn wanted to tell her that if she needed anything, she had to let her know, to not shoulder everything alone.
But on second thought, she had nothing to offer. She lacked connections and capabilities; she couldn't help her daughter at all.
The absolute best thing she could do right now was to take stellar care of Melody, giving Elara the peace of mind to bravely tackle her own affairs without constantly worrying about her rear flank.
Continuing to ask pointless questions would only add to her burden. It was better to remain quiet and simply execute whatever instructions she was given.
Jocelyn sighed and gently patted her daughter's head. "Go do what you need to do. Leave Melody to me."
Elara felt a lump in her throat. She blinked furiously, forcing back the defiant tears that threatened to spill over.
"Thanks, Mom."
She turned her head and kissed her daughter's cheek. "Mommy will be back soon. I'm still making you breakfast tomorrow morning."
Melody felt relieved. Pushing gently against Elara, she placed a kiss on her cheek as well. "Okay, Mommy. Be careful on the road."
Thinking for a second, she added, "If it's too late, you can sleep at Sarah's place. I can eat breakfast with Grandma and the others tomorrow morning."
"Absolutely not."
