Jocelyn had worked at the Beckett estate as a maid for over a decade.
When Maddox first met Elara, she was only an elementary school student.
He never liked domestic staff bringing their children into the home. It was a strict rule that employees couldn't bring their families into the workplace.
Jocelyn and Elara were an exception.
Between the maids, chefs, security personnel, and gardeners, the Beckett estate employed dozens of people. Aside from the chef who prepared his meals, the maid who cleaned his bedroom and The Manor Library, and his personal caretaker, Maddox rarely remembered anyone else.
Jocelyn had originally been just another member of the daily cleaning crew. By the time Maddox woke up, the house was mostly spotless. When he was home, there was rarely a need for cleaning around him unless there was an exceptional circumstance, so they hardly ever crossed paths.
The first time Jocelyn actually made an impression on him was when he accidentally overheard someone discussing her.
He recalled it was a day off. He was in the greenhouse, reading and soaking up the sun, when he suddenly heard a flurry of chatter outside. Listening closely, he recognized one of the voices as Eliza Eustace, the butler's wife.
Her tone was incredibly agitated, a mixture of fierce anger and deep concern.
"Are you just going to let him beat you like this?"
"Did you call the cops? What did they say?"
"Did you reach out to the local Women's Advocacy Group?"
"Are you crazy?! You finally managed to escape from your hometown, so why on earth would you go back just to get beaten?!"
"Just ignore him! If you don't go back, what can he possibly do to you?"
The more she spoke, the more profoundly frustrated she sounded.
The woman on the receiving end of the lecture finally found a window to speak when Eliza paused for breath.
"I have no choice. If I don't go back, my parents will pay the price."
"And my daughter..."
Her voice was impossibly light and devoid of emotion, as if she were simply recounting a stranger's tale. It was impossible to tell if she had grown completely numb and resigned to her fate, or if she had merely exhausted all her strength to defend herself.
"Sigh."
