The more Elara thought about it, the more anxious she became. She figured that if Maddox didn't speak soon, she'd have to find a way to gently break the ice and test the waters.
Just as that thought crossed her mind, Maddox finally spoke.
"How exactly do you want me to help you?" Maddox asked bluntly.
Elara paused for a second, snapping out of her spiraling thoughts. Sitting up straight, she met the old man's gaze head-on. "Julian's sheer lunacy has entirely exceeded my expectations. I am genuinely terrified for Melody's and my physical safety."
Maddox: "You want me to assign people to protect you?"
Elara answered truthfully, "I already found a new apartment this morning. We'll be moving very soon."
"He most likely stayed at Vivian's place last night. Based on my observations lately, he probably won't be coming home anytime soon, so I have a brief window to breathe. But after that, it's totally unpredictable."
Melody had just finally adapted to her new environment; transferring schools right now wasn't an option.
Unless Elara kept her out of school entirely, Julian would easily be able to track Melody down.
But Melody was already highly sensitive regarding everything with Julian. If she was pulled out of school without a distraction, she would only overthink things more, which could totally backfire.
During this critical phase of filing for divorce, if she just took Melody and ran, keeping Julian from finding them, she'd be handing him the perfect ammunition to claim she was hiding the child to snatch custody.
Her meager leverage would become a massive liability. She was already the underdog; she wouldn't stand a chance against him in court.
Elara broke down her current predicament for Maddox before stating her request. "Besides hoping you can ensure our safety, I'd also like to ask if you could introduce me to a top-tier attorney."
"You're suing Julian?" Maddox raised an eyebrow in surprise.
"Yes," Elara admitted frankly. "To be completely honest, I'm already prepping for it."
"Since you're a lawyer yourself, shouldn't you be perfectly capable of representing yourself?"
"Technically, yes," Elara nodded. "But I'm not a specialized divorce attorney, and I've been out of the workforce for four or five years. There are a lot of nuances I simply can't handle alone. All I can do right now is use my basic experience to implement some preventative measures."
She paused, pulling a folder from her bag and handing it to Maddox.
Maddox flipped it open. It was a dossier on Ark Solutions, the shell company Meredith had set up.
This was old news to him, so he merely skimmed it before snapping the folder shut and turning his focus back to Elara.
He looked at her, offering a silent inquiry as to what she meant by this.
Elara explained, "That night you invited us over for dinner, Julian warned me you might seek me out. I didn't think much of it then. But yesterday, after he demanded the divorce, I recalled his recent claims about the company being in trouble, so I decided to do some digging."
"I never expected I'd actually uncover a trail of breadcrumbs."
She paused, flashing an embarrassed smile. "But my resources are incredibly limited, and I could barely find anything concrete. Out of sheer desperation, I had to reach out to Sebastian and ask him to investigate for me."
Maddox's gaze dropped back to the folder. He never imagined Sebastian had been the one to feed her this intel!
"So, did Sebastian tell you to come to me as well?" the old man asked, genuinely curious.
Elara shook her head. "No, Sebastian never suggested that."
