Sebastian had once warned her that Maddox hated being lied to, urging her to tell the truth.
In truth, Elara would have done so even without his reminder.
She had already filed the divorce papers, the Asset Freeze Petition, and the Discovery Subpoena with the Shoreline County Courthouse. If Maddox wanted to know, he could easily find out. Making excuses was pointless and might even provoke his displeasure.
It was better to be completely honest and lay out her grievances before him.
Besides, she needed a favor from him now. If she wanted his protection, hiding anything was out of the question.
"When Melody was sick and wanted her dad, Julian kept using work as an excuse to stay away. He completely ignored the messages and videos she sent him," Elara explained honestly.
"That had never happened before, so I grew suspicious. I tried asking him about it, hoping he would just tell me the truth, but he dodged the question and kept using overtime as a lie."
"The company is stable now. No matter how busy he is, it couldn't possibly be worse than the first few years."
Maddox Beckett watched her quietly. He didn't offer an opinion, nor did he stop her from continuing.
Elara went on, "Maybe it was fate. When I was dealing with an old phone the other day, I checked the Shared Cloud Account—we used a joint ID back when we were dating. I saw pictures of women's items Julian had saved. Things I never received."
"My intuition told me things weren't that simple. I looked into it, and my suspicions were confirmed. Julian was indeed preparing for a divorce."
"The moment I realized he wanted to leave me with absolutely nothing, I gathered my evidence and filed for divorce."
At this, a flicker of emotion finally crossed Maddox's face.
His eyes widened slightly in surprise, though it was impossible to tell if it was out of disapproval or admiration.
