He was only ten years old when it happened. To lose the mother he adored at such a young age, to be plunged into such severe trauma that he completely withdrew from the world—he must have been in agonizing pain.

The more Elara thought about it, the more an awful tightness gripped her chest. The guilt was overwhelming.

That night, after Melody had fallen asleep, she calculated the time difference and sent Sebastian a text. First, she updated him on Maddox's agreement to help, and then she went straight to the apology:

[Did you tell me to be honest with Maddox because you knew he would look at me and see Juliet?]

Sebastian was nothing if not straightforward. She asked, and he answered: [Yes.]

His painfully honest reply instantly killed the entire speech Elara had prepared.

She sat there staring at her phone. Her thumb tapped out a line of text, only to quickly backspace it all.

Before she could even figure out how to comfort him, Sebastian's reassuring text came through first: [It was the most effective method. As long as it helped you, that's all that matters. Don't worry about it.]

Elara stared at the screen.

How could she not worry about it?

She deleted the paragraph she had just typed and abandoned all subtlety. [I'm so sorry.]

She fully admitted that when she broke down in front of Maddox, she had intentionally played off his residual guilt over Juliet. She had desperately hoped that, seeing another woman betrayed by her husband, Maddox might intervene and stop Julian and Meredith from destroying her.

That was all she had wanted.

Successfully convincing him to secure a lawyer for her—and to pay for it entirely—had wildly exceeded her expectations.

Now that she fully grasped the cause and effect, especially knowing that she had ripped open Sebastian's deepest wounds and forced him to relive his mother's tragic death, her remorse was suffocating.

[I was too dense and inconsiderate. I put you in a terrible position.]
